A remarkable new archaeological discovery in Morocco does more than just reveal the site of a large farming society at Oued Beht 5,000 years ago. It also places north west Africa on the map in a period that is best known for the advanced societies in Rome, Greece and Turkey - on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea basin. The Moroccan site proves that Africa was most likely a major player in a period of heightened trade, migration, innovation and cultural exchange between Mediterranean societies. We spoke with the three lead archaeologists - from Morocco, Italy and the UK - about what they found and why it’s such a big deal.
