The extent of Antarctic sea ice reached a record low last month.

The mass of the Antarctic ice sheet, formed over years of snow accumulation, has been decreasing for a long time. But the warming climate began affecting the region’s sea ice cover about seven years ago.

If left unchecked, research predicts that this continued warming and ice melt could raise global sea levels by 3.3 meters.

Today, in The Conversation Canada, Marta Moreno Ibáñez from Université du Québec à Montréal points out that while this Antarctic sea ice melt has not led to sea level rise yet, it is imminent.

She says that the sustained melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet could destabilize the retreat of sea ice and contribute to sea level rise for a long long time.

The melting of the Antarctic ice sheet will contribute for a long time to sea level rise, which will test humanity’s capacity to adapt.
