Junior ROWITA Fellowships Open Through February 15

 
 

To support the creative endeavors of high school students pursuing art-based higher education, the Cultural Council offers three $1,000 awards in performing, visual, and literary arts.

The St. Johns Cultural Council announces its Fourth Annual Haiku Contest, now open to St. Johns County residents of all ages until March 1st.

Poets are invited to submit up to three original haiku following the theme of William Bartram's Travels in St. Johns County, so works should be inspired by the flora, fauna, and ecology of the County’s natural landscape, especially along the St. Johns River.
 
A selection committee will choose three First Place haiku, one each in the following categories:
 
  • Students ages 5 – 9
  • Students ages 10 – 12
  • Students ages 13 – 17
  • Adults ages 18 & older

Haiku Contest
 

The St. Johns Cultural Council will host a group exhibition at the Rotunda Gallery of the St. Johns County Administration Building, St. Augustine, Florida from April 16th through May 30th, 2024 that celebrates the 250th anniversary of William Bartram's travels in St. Johns County.

We invite artists 18+ to submit up to five original works in any style or medium inspired by the flora and fauna of St. Johns County’s natural landscape, especially along the St. Johns River.

CALLING ALL CREATIVES

 
 

Please join us for our first Creative Social Hour on Tuesday, February 13th from 5-6 PM at The Waterworks, 184 San Marco Avenue.

All creatives - visual, literary, performing, culinary, and artists of any other genre - are invited to attend.

We will share information about our new artist advisory board, support available through the Cultural Council for individual artists, and an opportunity for you to share suggestions on ways that we can assist you. Each monthly event will include a brief program that will educate, entertain, or provide opportunities for networking and collaboration. Refreshments will be provided, and free parking is available in the lot adjacent to our building.

WINTER GAMBLE ROGERS CONCERT SERIES

 
 

The Live from The Waterworks concert series is dedicated to celebrating the influential recording artist Gamble Rogers, whose balladry and storytelling have greatly influenced American folk music. These concerts take place on the third Saturday of each month at 7 PM.

Premium ticket packages for the Winter series are SOLD OUT.

Only a few General Admission tickets are left for $20-$25:

Bach to Blacknotes featuring Kyle Walker

During Black History Month, the St. Augustine Music Festival is proud to feature critically-acclaimed pianist Kyle Walker. His solo performance, Bach to Blacknotes, features the works of J.S. Bach juxtaposed with the music of neglected composers who speak to issues of oppression and inequality.

The concert will be held at The Waterworks on February 11th at 3 PM. Tickets are $20 at the door or at StAugustineMusicFestival.org.

"Liar's Contest" by the Tale Tellers of St. Augustine

Tell your most outrageous stories when Tale Tellers of St. Augustine holds a “Liar’s Contest” at 2 PM on Sunday, February 18th at The Waterworks. The contest will be hosted by Pat Nease, a highly lauded liar. Sign up when you come—prizes will be awarded to the best liars. Enjoy an afternoon of fun and folly.

Beaux Arts Ball

The St. Augustine Art Association is celebrating its 100th Anniversary with a Beaux Arts Ball on Friday, February 23rd at 6 PM, at the Lightner Museum!

You’re invited to join us for an evening of celebration, dinner by the Chef’s Garden, dancing, and of course, fine art! $150 per person, $1,200 per table (8 people per table). Tickets are available at staaa.org.

Pecha Kucha's St. Augustine chapter hosts Volume 20: Turn the Page on Friday, March 1st at 6 PM at the Backyard Stage of the St. Augustine Amphitheater.

Request for Qualifications:
City of St. Augustine Outdoor Art Installation

The City of St. Augustine is seeking requests for qualifications for an outdoor art installation for the roundabout at the intersection of May Street and San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine, Florida. An artist or team of artists will create an original design, outdoor, permanent, large-scale, site-specific civic art installation for the roundabout. The installation must meet FDOT requirements and materials must be able to withstand extreme weather and heavy traffic, be structurally sound, and require minimal upkeep and low maintenance costs.

The City of St. Augustine intends this public art to reflect civic content and be a form of symbolic speech of the municipality: no logos, words, symbols, or statements should be included. The budget for this project is $250,000.

Call for Art: 25th Anniversary Open Community Art Project

The Butterfield Art Garage is seeking submissions for its 25th Annual Community Art Project that fits the theme of "Influences." Artists of all ages and abilities are invited to create work that speaks to the concept of Influences. Whether it's an encouraging mentor, an inspiring artist or work of art, the beauty of nature, or the emotions that drive you to create, this theme is open to interpretation.

The entry fee is $10 and includes an 8" x 8" canvas. All work made from other materials must conform to these dimensions. Canvases and entry forms are available at Butterfield Garage Art Gallery from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Submissions must be received by Sunday, April 20th.

Call for Submissions: History Through the Lens of Architecture

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the St. Augustine Art Association will host a national juried photography exhibition, History Through the Lens of Architecture, from July 18th through August 25th, 2024.

Professional and amateur photographers from across the nation are invited to capture the undeniable impact of architecture on local culture and community.

Request for Qualifications: Community Mural Program

NOW Art has partnered with Walmart to facilitate a community mural program to include art inside store entrances that anchor people to the place and create a sense of belonging. NOW Art is seeking requests for qualifications from local and regional artists of all ages and levels of experience to create mural renders in various styles that reflect their community.

Artworks can be made with traditional media or digital art software, but the final deliverable must be formatted for printing at a large scale in high resolution (500-700 dpi in CMYK). Compensation is $1,000 with opportunities for more commissions.

Augusta Savage Grant

The National Sculpture Society presents this annual award for Excellence in Sculpture. This $2,500 grant will be awarded to a talented emerging sculptor who self-identifies as Black or African American.

Applicants must be citizens of or residents in the United States with a social security number. Works inspired by nature are preferred.
