Community and Stakeholder Update December 2023 - Issue 6
Rye Pier Open for Summer!
We've been preparing to reopen Rye Pier for Christmas and it’s looking better than ever after a significant rebuild and upgrade through 2022 and 2023. As of today, the entire pier is open for all the activities you enjoy, including walking, fishing and snorkelling. If you’ve missed visiting this special spot, why not head down soon and take a look at what’s been happening this year!

More space for enjoying spectacular bay views
Before you reach the pier head, venture down near the water via the accessible new low landings and stop at the new viewing platform which provides an extra spot to take stunning photos with a backdrop of clear waters and the rolling coastline. For those who enjoy taking in the view and sunset across the bay, the pier has new bench seating built by Point Nepean Men’s Shed using salvaged decking timbers from the pier, providing a welcome connection to the past.

An accessible and safe visitor experience
The wider pier now has extra space and improved safety features including handrails and solar lights. The low landings are all accessible, making it a welcoming space for all to visit. The pier’s extra space also allows emergency and maintenance vehicle access.

Berthing at Rye Pier this summer
The pier is safer and larger to accommodate our growing community and the popularity of boating, if you’re a boater visiting this summer, here’s what you need to know: - The low landing nearest the foreshore will be open, providing short term public berthing.
- The pier’s new low landings will be finalised in early 2024. These low landings do not have fenders and are not yet available for berthing but are open for pedestrian access.
- The strengthened pier will provide berthing for tall ships and larger vessels along the pier’s western
face. This additional capacity is not yet available and will be delivered in 2024 as part of final works to be completed after the summer holidays.

Final elements of the project to be delivered in 2024
While the pier is open for summer enjoyment, a few final touches will be completed in 2024. The new strengthened (western) fenders will be made operational, and the new low landings will have fenders and walers installed, enabling boats to begin to use this extra berthing space. To enable a safe and enjoyable summer by the bay, these final works won’t begin until after the busy summer holiday period. This redevelopment of Rye Pier is a significant project which will strengthen the pier as a local community asset and attraction for decades to come. Thanks again for your patience while we deliver this important work.
Jumping and diving from piers is dangerous, and the sparkling waters under Rye Pier are tidal and often very shallow. If you’re coming to visit, don’t forget to ‘pack your summer smarts’ and visit safely.
