The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how quickly and efficiently workers in some industries and businesses can work remotely — including Canada’s federal government employees.
Today in The Conversation Canada, Loleen Berdahl of the University of Saskatchewan asks the question: If work doesn’t need to be done in Ottawa-area offices, does it need to be done in Ottawa at all?
Berdahl makes a compelling argument that thousands of federal public service positions could be moved out of the capital region, citing research that suggests decentralizing public service jobs reduces costs, strengthens national security by spreading government functions across the country and reduces cynicism toward government.
