Nato countries (with the exception of Spain) have responded to pressure from the US and agreed to boost their defence budgets to 5% of GDP by 2035. At a summit in the Hague, European figures have strained hard to keep Donald Trump on side, with Mark Rutte going so far as to rather grotesquely refer to the president as “daddy”.

But all this was still not quite enough to leave the international alliance feeling entirely secure. In fact, if anything, the Nato summit showed that while Europeans continue to prioritise protecting themselves from Russia, the US is more concerned about its own relationship with China.
