Please join us for a unique adoption event at The Bristal Assisted Living in Westbury located at 117 Post Avenue on Saturday, October 26th from 12 to 3 p.m. This Halloween-themed event will highlight our Seniors for Seniors program which reduces barriers to pet adoption for seniors by continuing to pay all reasonable medical expenses for the cat and allowing senior cats to return to the Ladew Cat Sanctuary if their adopter becomes unable to care for them. The Bristal will be decorated for Halloween and will provide cat cupcakes and Halloween themed finger-food. Staff and volunteers of the Ladew Cat Sanctuary will be on hand to discuss our Seniors for Seniors Program and to introduce attendees to cats of all ages who are available for adoption. The event is free and open to the public, although RSVP's are encouraged to info@theladewcatsanctuary.org. Benefits of pet companionship for seniors include improved physical and mental health, improved quality of life, and longer lifespan. In recognition of this:

What's the 3-3-3 Rule?Imagine, if you will, that someone just put you in a box and on the other side of that box is a completely new environment with people you have never met before. You have absolutely no idea why this happened and you are pretty scared of what is going to happen next. How do you think you would handle that? Would you be under the bed, petrified, or acting like nothing happened and completely at home with strangers, grabbing the remote and helping yourself to food in the pantry? Most cats (and I think I would be with them) choose option A, under the bed. I’d probably be so nervous I wouldn’t even eat! This scenario is COMPLETELY normal for cats. It takes TIME for cats to adjust to new surroundings, They do not know that what has just happened (an adoption) is a good thing. All they know is that they’re in a completely new place, with new smells and people they have never met before and it’s pretty scary! Change is hard for all of us to accept, especially when we didn’t initiate the change. For cats I think it’s even harder. The 3, 3, 3 rule is real (and for some cats it could be 4, 4, 4 or even 5, 5, 5) — please give your new cat a chance to come to terms with change. While it’s true that some confident cats may adjust quickly, people are missing out on really wonderful cats because they give up a little too soon for cats to figure out that where they are is finally home.
Happie* Tales: Cupcake and Chanel Go HomeHelen and Chanel Bonded kitties, Cupcake and Chanel were returned in 2022 when their owner had to move to a non-pet-friendly apartment. It's always more difficult to adopt out bonded pairs, especially when they are older and even more difficult when one of them has a medical condition. Helen, who has had cats all of her life, was ready to hear the pitter-patter of little paws and really wanted to help a cat that was having a harder time getting adopted. When we mentioned Cupcake and Chanel, she was eager to meet them. When Helen came to the shelter, she spent a good amount of time with them and decided to take them home. Helen really wanted cats that would sleep in bed with her at night. For the first few days, Cupcake and Chanel were under the bed, but after reading the 3-3-3- Rule, Helen knew that this was normal. Her patience paid off, on the fourth night, both Cupcake and Chanel (adopted through our Seniors for Seniors Program) spent the night snuggled together with their new mom, Helen, in bed. *Fun Fact: The "H" in Patricia H.
