Local elections are taking place across the UK next week but the one to watch must surely be the assembly vote in Northern Ireland. That’s because Sinn Féin could be about to become the largest party there for the first time in history. With unionists in disarray over Brexit, the republicans have run a campaign focusing on the cost of living crisis and essentially anything other than the sectarian divide.
If polls are to be believed, this has paid off. We could see a Sinn Féin first minister and a DUP deputy. The two posts carry the same amount of power but the symbolism of such a change is enormous for Northern Ireland. Peter McLoughlin reports from Belfast on the most important vote in a generation.
