Tools to help you use metrics responsibly when assessing others.
Responsible metrics is part of ensuring a fair and thriving research culture at our University. By using expert judgement and considering a variety of indicators – including qualitative – we can all ensure we are upholding our commitment to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment.
Our Guiding Principles identify what you need to consider when using metrics and other indicators when assessing the research of others.
You can find out more about responsible metrics and what we’ve been doing at the University of Exeter to implement this, by reading our blog post or discovering our other resources to aid your decision making on our responsible metrics webpage.

Sustainable Projects Funding Scheme
The University has received funding to support the introduction of sustainable initiatives across our estate. This funding is supporting the work of four key workstreams, one of which is the introduction of a Funding Scheme available for the implementation of local projects or purchases in order to support the embedding of sustainable practices in both our teaching and research spaces.
The application will be reviewed by a panel of technical and sustainability staff. There is no specific deadline, as there is funding available for both 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. The panel will convene regularly to discuss new applications.
We have to ensure that any projects proposed for this financial year are able to be completed in this financial year (end of July), so make sure to consider lead-times when making your proposal.
For questions contact Emma McArdle (e.mcardle@exeter.ac.uk)

Find out what we are doing to support our research culture and how you can play your part
Research culture can be summed up as the shared experience of the behaviours, values and expectations of all those who contribute towards research. A positive research culture not only enables all researchers to thrive, but has wider benefits from the way research is conducted and communicated, to consequent impact in society.
Our new Research Culture SharePoint site provides information about how we support a positive and thriving research culture and includes examples of what our departments are doing to support research culture locally.
There is growing sector awareness about the importance of research culture and our funders are increasingly wanting to see what we do to support our research culture. In response, we have developed a Grants toolkit which can help you answer research culture questions for grant bids.
Fostering a positive research culture is a collective responsibility and we encourage you to join in the conversation on our Research Culture Viva Engage community.

Exeter University - ECR Liaison Forum
Next meeting for your diary:-
Tuesday 1 August 2023 (10 am - 11.30 am).
All ECRs can attend an 'ECR Liaison Forum' (ECR LF). The LFs continue to develop and now act as a formal route for PGRs and ECRs within the ECR Networks to feed into University strategy. Dedicated ECR Reps feed ‘to and from’ the ECR Liaison Forums from several strategic boards, steering and working groups, including the Research and Impact Executive Committee (RIEC), and other steering and working groups such as the Concordat Steering Group. If you'd like to come along, simply email researcherdevelopment@exeter.ac.uk asking to be added to the ECR LF list and you will be invited to future meetings.
