A Note from the ED

Ok friends- we need your help.  In August 2023, we received 213 requests from folks asking us to take their donated yarn.  Now, we obviously LOVE yarn, but we are a small organization with an even smaller office. There is absolutely no way we can take that amount of yarn, and in fact, as we stock up for winter, our space is even more limited.

Most of the folks wishing to donate their yarn to K4P are sadly cleaning out the house of a loved one or helping someone downsize.  We can all assume this is a difficult time, so I would like to help make it easier by listing some places across the country (especially Colorado) where folks can take their yarn stashes. This is where you come in! Can you help us cultivate a list of places that take yarn donations? If you know of a place near you, please send your recommendation to Jo at jo@knitting4peace.org.  She will be collecting them so we have a good resource to share.

We can't take it all but hopefully we can help get it in the hands of those who need it most!

Gratefully-

Kelly

Dory & Dean McFail

A Round of Applause for our Create-A-Thon Top Maker Fundraisers!

You can see by the beautiful blanket above that Dory is already a top-notch maker, but during the 2023 Create-A-Thon she and her husband, Dean, came through as our Top Maker Fundraisers as well! They have been long-time supporters of the K4P mission and we are so grateful to have them as a part of the community.

"We've always been impressed with the soft, unassuming kindness of your organization and its many, many, many, helping hands." ~Dory

Consistency is Key

Thank you so much for all the beautiful items you've sent in the past few months. It's such fun to see the wide variety of colors, patterns, and sizes in all we receive and we are grateful for each and every item. We are particularly hopeful that we will soon have enough hats to fill all the requests from community groups as we quickly move into the fall months. To ensure the hats you send will quickly find a home, please adhere to the following:

  1. We continue to receive requests for hats of all sizes, with the exception of very small hats. Please do NOT send premie hats or infant hats smaller than 12” in circumference. We have many of these already and rarely receive requests for the smallest sizes. We’ll be sure to let you know when, or if, this changes.
  1. We can always use hats that have circumferences of 13” or larger. A general rule of thumb is 13”to 18” circumference for children younger than 3. For children ages 3-10, the circumference should be 19” to 20” and 21” to 23” for teens and adults.
  2. Although there is some variation in sizing charts, you may find one at https://blog.lionbrand.com/hat-size-guide/
  3. Animal hair can be a health risk, especially for young children so please make sure there are no hairs on any item you send us.

Thank you!
~Jo

Item Requests:

NICU Blankets and Peace Pals

NICU Blankets

We are currently struggling to fill requests for small NICU blankets. However, size on these small blankets is really important!  Please make sure the small blankets are between 26” and 30” in both length and width. We’ve been asked by our Community Pearls to not send out blankets smaller than this.

*Small blankets can be 26” x 26”, 30” x 30”, or anything in-between, but must be no smaller than 26” on the smallest side.

*It’s particularly important that there is NO animal hair or perfumes on these special blankets as it can be quite dangerous for the little ones.

*Please avoid making small blankets that are lacey or have holes as tiny fingers, toes, or IV tubes may get caught in them.

*Make sure to sew in your yarn ends.

Peace Pals

Summer travels have depleted our supply of Peace Pals and we now have many requests from schools and groups so please keep those coming in! Make sure they have friendly faces, with smiles and no “x” eyes or buttons. Please see our guidelines for these special Pals.

As always, we welcome hats, scarves, mittens, finger puppets, baby blankets, booties, and lap blankets. Please check with us before sending in any unusual items.

*Please do not send in store-bought mittens as we cannot send those out with our handmade items. We encourage you to find an organization in your area that has a need for store-bought items.

You can find patterns on our website https://knitting4peace.org/what-we-do/patterns. We are so grateful to you for all you do!
