Law School Bulletin October 2023

Welcome to our October bulletin. 

As we approach the release of formative assessments, a reminder that the journey of a successful law student is not solely about textbooks and classes. It is about honing your analytical skills, refining your argumentative prowess, and nurturing a deep understanding of the intricate fabric of the law. Each formative assessment is an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. 

The essence of a truly accomplished legal mind lies in the ability to adapt, learn, and thrive in the face of challenges. Through formative assessments the mettle of a legal scholar is tested; experience and resultant feedback helps us to improve. 

Additionally, I would encourage you to seize as many opportunities as you can. Meet new people, acquire new skills and develop the ones you already possess. 

As educators and mentors, we are committed to providing you with the resources, guidance and support necessary for excellence. However, the ultimate responsibility to make the most of these opportunities lies with you. Venture beyond the ordinary, challenge your intellect, and discover the profound impact you can make in the Law School and beyond.

📖Education Matters: Academic Support

Academic Personal Tutoring update 

Dr Victoria Hamlyn, Law School Senior Tutor

Your APT is a core point of contact for you and is here to support you with your studies, listen and offer guidance, provide references, and signpost you to university services that may be useful.

What’s up next?
Watch out for an email from your APT asking you to book an individual meeting with them. This meeting is an opportunity to talk about how things are going, any support requirements, your aspirations, and to get to know each other a little better.

Expectations
-    Please respond to communications from your APT.
-    If cannot attend a scheduled meeting with your APT, please let them know.
-    Email your APT if you have an urgent issue or a query – do not wait for them to contact you.

-    Not sure who your APT is? Please check SRS or with the Amory Hub.
-    If you experience any problems with the personal tutoring system in the school please get in touch with the Year 1 Deputy Senior Tutor, Dr Rachel Gimson.

The Law School Senior Tutor Team is made up of the Senior Tutor and four Deputy Senior Tutors (Year 1, Year 2, Final Year and PGT). We are responsible for the organisation and management of the Law School APT system. 

👋Welcoming Amy Man to the Law School

Hi, it's great to be at Exeter Law School and join as one of your Senior Lecturers. I teach on the Law of Contract modules (UG1 and Grad LLB) and Business and Human Rights. I'm also the new LLB Director and I'm more than happy to talk to students if you have any queries or ideas. 

Before becoming a lecturer, I was a Legal Researcher for the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre (an NGO based in London) and then, a Human Rights and Labour Standards Analyst for Verisk Maplecroft (a risk analysis company based in Bath).

I found that I really missed Higher Education, so I decided to undertake a PhD in Law, which examined the intersectionality between international investment law and development from a Sino-African perspective. During this time, I was a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of the West of England (Bristol) for almost a decade teaching. Look forward to meeting you soon.

Congratulations to Mila Spence, third year student who has just returned from a trip to Baku, Azerbaijan. She presented a paper to the International Astronautical Congress, ‘A Call for an Internationally Binding Legal Definition of ‘Sustainability’ in Outer Space Legislation’. 📆Opportunities and Events 

Mooting and Competitions

At this time of year a lot of Mooting and other competitions are open for you to express an interest. With support from the Law School all the way through the process you will develop many profession-related skills. Below are a few highlights, others are on the Opportunities page. Students can ask for more detail by emailing Lindsey Connett.

Client Interviewing Competition

In partnership with Foot Anstey LLP, we are pleased to announce a school-wide client interviewing competition to take place later this term.The firm will be hosting the grand final at their Exeter office on the afternoon of 22 November 2023.  After the final round has taken place, there will be an opportunity to network with various lawyers from the firm, ranging from Partner to Trainee level.

To participate in the competition, you will need to be in teams of 2 students.  It is up to you who you pair with. Please only register your interest once you have formed your team. You need to do this by 5pm on 30 October.

National Law Student Triathlon

We will be sending a team of two students to the KLS Thomson Reuters Triathlon this academic year. Last time the students representing the Law School participated in a very close competition and achieved an excellent second place. Under the competition rules, the Law School can only enter students who have not participated in an external competition before and come from a non-traditional background for the legal profession.

The Law Triathlon 2024 will take place over two days (20 and 21 April 2024) and students will have the opportunity to compete in a negotiation, first instance advocacy and a full moot. Express interest to Lindsey by 17 November. Email: mooting@exeter.ac.uk.

🤝Volunteering

Junior Lawyers Against Poverty (25 Student Opportunities) Open to all years. 

JLAP is a nationwide pro bono initiative concerned with international development, poverty and human rights issues. Junior Lawyers network of students (both law and non-law) organise on-campus fundraising events, visiting speaker events, academic articles and on and off-campus training in issues related to international law and development. As part of the project, a twinning programme to match students in the UK with law students in developing countries can be developed.

Commitment time expected: monthly meetings plus additional hours leading up to events, training, and writing articles.

Wiltshire Law Centre (2 Student Opportunities). Open to all students.

Wiltshire Law Centre are looking for students who are enthusiastic about seeing how a Law Centre operates.  Students will be able to see and assist with housing cases and be set tasks that will enable them to develop key skills of communication, drafting and research. Commitment: 1 day per week for 7 hours.

The Community Law Clinic (Access to Justice and Immigration Clinics) opportunities will be advertised in term 2 for volunteering over the summer months.

Career Zone Law Podcast: In conversation with Luke Parry Legal Director (Global Licensing) at Adidas

Luke graduated from Exeter with an LLB in Law in 2011. He is an English-qualified solicitor working in house as a Legal Director at Adidas in Amsterdam, focusing on global licensing matters.

This podcast is a must listen if you’re not quite sure what you want to do when you graduate. Luke shares how important it has been to take time to explore his preferences and skill strengths in work to make informed career decisions.
