Understanding Loneliness in Girls
Loneliness is one of the quietest struggles many girls carry, especially in high-achieving school communities where the surface often looks polished and confident. A student can be surrounded by peers and involved in activities, and still feel deeply alone. In elite academic environments, success is visible and celebrated, while uncertainty, self-doubt, and emotional fatigue tend to be hidden. Read more.
The Way of Play: Takeaways from Dr Tina Payne Bryson

While we know that unstructured play is good for a child's attention span and creativity, the latest research shows that specific, deliberate, and playful interactions between children and their caregivers are key to healthy emotional development and later resilience. On Thursday, January 15, Crofton House welcomed parenting expert, best-selling author, and psychotherapist Dr Tina Payne Bryson to share how daily, little moments together can have the greatest impact on our children’s lives, and delve into playful techniques to harness the power of those moments. Learn more or watch the recording here.

Ministry Inspection: An Affirming Report
Every two years, independent schools in BC undergo a comprehensive inspection by the Ministry of Education and Child Care to ensure the highest standards of excellence. This past October, we were pleased to host the Ministry’s evaluation team, and we are proud to share that the final report highlights several core strengths of our school community.
The inspectors commended our holistic approach to education, noting how our beautiful, purpose-built facilities create an ideal environment for students to thrive. They specifically praised our 'Learning Habits'—which bridge BC’s Core Competencies with First Peoples’ Principles of Learning—and our commitment to thoughtful, standards-based assessments that provide a clear picture of each student's unique progress.
Most importantly, the report recognized our deep investment in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and our dedication to supporting our educators. By providing our staff with specialized research roles, mentorship through our Associate Teacher program, and dedicated time for collaboration, we ensure students are guided by a faculty that is both highly skilled and deeply inspired. While we are already incorporating the Ministry's recommendations to further refine our practices, we celebrate these affirmations of the vibrant, nurturing, and engaging environment we provide for your daughters.
Traffic Updates: Supporting Traffic Safety and Respect in the Neighbourhood

Please leave 1.5 metres of space on either side of driveways. As we start the new year, we ask all drivers to take extra care when parking near CHS. Parking too close (as shown in the photo above) can make it difficult for residents to safely enter or exit their driveways, especially on our narrow neighbourhood streets. City bylaws prohibit parking within 1.5 metres of a driveway, so please double-check your parking to help keep our community safe and accessible for everyone.
Emergency Preparedness Resources for Parents
At CHS, emergency drills are part of our annual planning. Students and employees regularly practice what to do in many different emergency situations, both those that involve leaving the buildings and those that include staying safe when locked inside. On Wednesday, January 14, for example, the whole school practiced our earthquake safety procedures.
The effectiveness of our response to any emergency hinges on parents and guardians being knowledgeable of what is happening on campus and their role in the plan. Current emergency procedures are outlined in the Parent & Student Handbook. Also, be sure to watch the video that describes what parents need to know about the procedure for picking up their child in an emergency.
Inclement Weather Notice
Winter weather can make travel challenging. The School has a procedure to respond to inclement weather that results in school closure, and this is outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook under “School Closure Procedures” (page 37). Communication of closure is sent through a third-party system, Regroup, via voicemail, email, and text.
Honouring Ms Barbara M. Walker

It is with sadness that we share the recent passing of Ms Barbara M. Walker, who served as Head of School at Crofton House from 1995 to 2000.
During her tenure, Barbara worked thoughtfully to ensure students could fully benefit from the new Junior School and Senior School Science Centre, and embrace emerging technological changes. Following her retirement from Crofton House, Barbara remained a valued and familiar presence in the CHS community, often attending graduations, the Carol Service, and other significant school events. Read more.
A service will be held on Saturday, January 24, at 2:00 pm at St. Helen’s Anglican Church, 4405 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC. |

Global Connections & Reflections: Exchange Student Insights at Crofton House

Crofton House School’s Global Exchange Program offers students a unique chance to experience life and learning in another country while also welcoming international students into our community. Through studying abroad and living with host families, students from both schools build meaningful connections and develop key life skills such as independence, adaptability, courage, and resilience.
In the fall, CHS hosted two students from Waikato Diocesan School in New Zealand, Cassidy and Renée. Hear what they had to say about their two-week experience as part of the Crofton House community.
