Welcome to week 7 - Term 2 - 2026!"Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, IN THIS EDITION: • Growth and Achievement KEY DATES:
I hope that all families took advantage of the extra-long weekend and did something special. As school staff, we took advantage of the opportunity to have a professional learning day on Friday to build on our understanding of our students, the curriculum, and our teaching approaches. Student Achievement Spotlight – Writing Success We’re excited to share some wonderful news about student writing across the school this semester. Our focus on building strong writing skills, fostering a love of writing, and helping students recognise their own improvement is making a real difference. Across the year levels, students are showing encouraging growth in their writing. It’s been especially pleasing to see strong gains in the early years, where students are building important foundations, as well as steady progress in the middle and upper years. In classrooms, we’re noticing clear improvements in how students put their ideas together, using more varied sentence structures, accurate punctuation, and stronger storytelling techniques. Just as importantly, students are becoming more confident and engaged writers, taking pride in their work and celebrating their progress. This is a great reflection of the consistent efforts of our teachers and the positive learning culture across the school. We’re very proud of the progress our students are making and look forward to seeing their writing continue to flourish.
Coolbinia Building Fund Update Thank you to the many families who shared positive feedback after our Building Fund newsletter item in the last newsletter. For families who would like to support upcoming school improvement projects, donations can be made directly to the Coolbinia Building Fund using the details below:
World Environment Day (5 June) is recognised globally as a time to celebrate and raise awareness of how to protect and restore our planet. This year's motto is “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” Coolbinia Primary School recognises that climate change is one of the defining challenges facing our students’ future. Through recycling initiatives, our Bush Classroom, revegetation projects with the Friends of Coolbinia Bushland, Two-Way Science, and learning about energy and sustainability, students develop the knowledge and skills needed to make a positive difference. By empowering students to understand environmental
challenges and take practical action, we are helping to nurture informed citizens who are ready to shape a more sustainable future. Celebrating Success in the Italian Festival We are incredibly proud of our students who achieved outstanding results in the 2026 IAWCC Italian Festival Primary School Competition. A special congratulations to Ofir Harari (Year 1), who was named the winner for her year level. We also celebrate the achievements of Luca Comito (PP), Maya Shahar and Amber Paget (Year 1), Alyssa Lim (Year 2), and Emilia Daniel and Daniella Benedetto (Year 5), who all received Merit Certificates in recognition of their high standard of work, creativity, and effort. This success reflects both the commitment of our students and the excellent teaching and support provided through our Italian program. We congratulate all participants on representing our school so proudly. RoboClub Sparks Innovation and Problem Solving Our Year 5/6 RoboClub has had a fantastic start to the term, with 24 students enthusiastically participating in after-school sessions. Working with LEGO SPIKE Prime and EV3 robotics kits, students have been learning to program their robots to move, turn, navigate shapes, and complete obstacle challenges. It has been wonderful to see the growth in students’ confidence, persistence, and problem-solving skills. Many students have progressed from having little or no experience to independently building, testing, and refining their own robotic programs. We look forward to welcoming families to a special open session in Week 10, where students will proudly showcase their learning and give the community an opportunity to see their robots in action.
Principal’s Reflection: There Is No “Average” Learner I am reading End of Average by Todd Rose, which challenges the long-standing belief that people can be understood or measured against a single “average.” The central message is both simple and powerful: there is no such thing as an average person; each individual is a unique combination of strengths, needs, and experiences. This thinking resonates strongly with the work we are doing at Coolbinia. Our Teaching and Learning Model recognises that high-quality teaching is not about delivering the same lesson in the same way to every student, but about continually refining practice to ensure each learner can be successful. Through coaching cycles of identifying, learning, and improving, our teachers are supported to respond to the individual needs of students in their classrooms, moving away from one-size-fits-all approaches. It also aligns closely with our commitment to student voice and agency. When we create opportunities for students to set goals, reflect on their learning, and make choices about how they learn, we acknowledge that each learner’s pathway is different. This is not about lowering expectations; on the contrary, it is about ensuring every student is challenged appropriately and supported to achieve their personal best. As a school community, this reminds us of an important principle: success is not about how closely a child matches an “average,” but about how well we understand and respond to who they are as a learner. By continuing to personalise learning through evidence-based teaching, coaching, and strong partnerships with students, we are advancing our Business Plan priorities of high-impact teaching, student agency, and continuous improvement, ensuring every student is supported to thrive, achieve, and grow.
