A Message from the Principal

Another edition of Newman Newbies!

It is published as we celebrate the Feast of our College patron, St John Henry Newman, whose example inspires us to seek our personal best.  We have entered the final term for 2024 and there is great excitement as our students immerse themselves in the richness of the faith, learning, pastoral and extra-curricular programs planned for the term.

Shortly, we will farewell our Year 12 students at their graduation.  As we do so, our incoming Year 12, 2025 student leaders have been busy laying the foundation for their service to the Newman College family. We are also welcoming our incoming Year 7 2025 group for their orientation, which is supported by wonderful Year 10 Peer Leaders.

Term 3 was a fantastic time where our students really had the opportunity to ‘Let their Light Shine’ in areas such as the Catholic Visual and Performing Arts Festival, Interschool Athletics Carnivals for Primary and Secondary, Marian and Lavalla Primary Assembly performances, the Year 7 to 10 play ‘The Worst Breakups of All Time, Year 12 Music Night, Marist Connect and Gamechangers events. The Newman College Parent Quiz Night was also a great initiative, which brought together so many families in a wonderful, engaging event, raising funds to supportg Marist Solidarity projects.

The final term of the year is just about to begin and the College is ready to start a very full program of opportunities for students in their learning, formation, the Arts and sport.

On the strategic development front, the Primary build draws closer to its completion and our Year 3 to 6 students have settled well into their state-of-the-art facility. We are also excited to be finalising our new Strategic School Improvement Plan 2025-2027, with its focus on student growth, formation and quality Marist education.

Newman Newbies provides a snapshot of the great work our students, families and staff are doing to enrich our family Spirit. Enjoy the read.

Catholic Performing Arts Festival

Newman College students have excelled at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival, which began in mid-July and finished in early September.  We had 277 students from the Lavalla and Marcellin campuses take part in a range of categories, including music, drama, and dance, and their performances were met with great acclaim.

A special congratulations goes to Heloise Nathan, who was awarded the Monsignor Michael Keating Shield, recognising her outstanding contribution to the Festival.

Assumption Day

In August the PK-12 College community celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an important Marist Feast Day. The Marian and Lavalla campuses celebrated a joyful day, beginning with Mass, followed by Buddy Day and a fete with a cuddly farm, face painting, and games. At the secondary school, students also celebrated Mass and participated in service activities,  ending with a lively fete and guild sports. This day was a cherished moment to honour our Marist identity and community spirit.

Athletics Carnivals

Term 3 marked athletics season at Newman College, kicking off with the secondary students’ Guild Carnival. The Year 12s dazzled in their guild-coloured costumes, as students showcased fierce competition and camaraderie. The top performers joined the ACC Team. Year 7-10 athletes competed in the NAS Carnival, and the full team placed 5th in the A Division Carnival. Education support students competed in the ACC ISP Athletics Carnival. Junior school students enjoyed their carnival on the Marcellin Oval, despite rain interrupting the high jump and hurdles.

HaSS Week kept the excitement going with quizzes, mummification competitions, a Newman College amazing race, and a medieval combat incursion. Language Week rounded off the term with the 'Sensei-tion' room at Marian campus, Taiko drumming performances, delicious gelato, and a lively piano accordion performance. It was a fun and enriching term, full of creativity and learning!

Game Changers Immersion in Mullewa

Year 11 students spent a week as part of the Mullewa Community. through the Game Changers Program.  Our students and staff had the opportunity to support the community, helping at the local school, with preparations for the local flower show and fair and in other ways in the community.  This is a well-established program at Newman College which allows our students to exercise community outreach and service.

Students win at Youthfest

During the term our talented Year 7-10 drama students performed The Worst Breakups of All Time in a one-night-only show. They then took their performance to YouthFest, the Independent Theatre Association of WA’s Youth Theatre Festival.  We are thrilled to announce their performance won Best Production, Year 10 student Sam won Best Actor and Drama Teacher Mr Lang won Best Director. A stellar performance by all.

Newman College Community Quiz Night

Newman College recently hosted its highly anticipated Community Quiz Night, one of the school's major events, bringing together over 250 participants for a spirited battle of wits. The night was filled with fun and laughter in the College Auditorium. Attendees enjoyed friendly competition, with all proceeds going to support Marist Solidarity, an organisation dedicated to empowering young people in Asia and the Pacific through education and development programs.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout

Approximately 40 students from Years 7-12 participated in the annual St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout. It was an inspiring night filled with compassion, learning, and solidarity. Our students engaged in games and activities that highlighted the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
A highlight of the night was presenting St Vincent de Paul with 16 care packs and dozens of blankets, all generously donated by Miss Mincherton and the Y10 students from her Community, Family and Children class, who raised the funds for the packs through a bake sale.

Italian Language Tour

The Newman College Italian Tour has taken students and teachers on an unforgettable journey through Italy’s most iconic locations. After arriving in Rome, the group marveled at the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps before learning the art of pizza-making. Their adventure continued with visits to Florence, where they explored the birthplace of the Renaissance, Pisa with its famous Leaning Tower, the romantic canals of Venice, and the stunning scenery of Lake Como. The tour offered students a blend of ancient history, art, culture, and language immersion, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Farewell to the Year 12s of 2024

In the final week of term, the College farewelled the Year 12 Class of 2024 in a series of events filled with joy, fun, and reflection. From waterslides on the oval and guild breakfasts to celebration assemblies and a heartfelt guard of honour, the week offered many opportunities to acknowledge their personal achievements and contributions to the College. Staff members who had guided them throughout their journey shared emotional farewells, making it a moving and memorable experience. The Newman College community extends its best wishes to the graduating class.

APPLICATIONS FOR ENROLMENT

Newman College continues to be a school of choice for local families. This has led to a recent surge in Applications for Enrolment. The focus on Year 7 intake years has grown considerably. The effect has been a significant increase in the College’s waitlists for upcoming Year 7 cohorts including 2025, 2026 and 2027. This trend is expected to continue for Year 7 cohorts in 2028 and beyond. The College is unable to accommodate all students with an offer due to the extremely high demand for places.

The College has limited availability in secondary school for 2025 in Years 9, 10 and 11.  We wish to advise that students who attend Newman College in their Primary school years are guaranteed enrolment into Year 7. We, therefore, encourage families to consider securing an available position in our Primary year groups should you wish to guarantee ongoing enrolment into Secondary school years.

The following year groups have limited availability at present (July, October), and are subject to ongoing change:

  • Year 1
  • Year 4

Should you have a desire to bring forward your Application for Enrolment into one of the above-listed year groups, please contact us via email without delay. Acceptance into our Primary year groups will ensure a position is maintained in Year 7.

*All applications are assessed in line with the Enrolment Policy and are subject to review and approval by the College Principal.
