Dear Parents and Carers,
A reminder that next weekend is a four-day long weekend for students, with a School Development Day on Friday 29 May and the WA Day public holiday on Monday 1 June.
Staff will be engaged in a full day of professional learning on Friday.
For students and families, this will be a timely opportunity to pause, recharge and reset during a very full 11-week term.

School Growth, Site Constraints and Future Planning
Subiaco Primary School is operating within a very significant and complex local context. Our school is located on a constrained inner-city site, and the surrounding area continues to experience growth, increased traffic and competing demands for community infrastructure.
I share our community’s understanding that school growth, site constraints and traffic flow are important issues that require careful and ongoing attention. These matters remain a priority in our planning, and I am continuing to work with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Works, and the City of Subiaco as discussions continue regarding longer-term planning for our school and wider community.
Representatives from the Department of Housing and Works, who work with the Department of Education on school infrastructure matters, will be meeting with me next week. This is part of the ongoing work to better understand the challenges facing our school and to consider future planning needs.
This is not a simple issue, and there are no quick or easy solutions. However, it is an important conversation, and I will continue to advocate for our students, staff and families in a constructive and informed way.
I will keep the school community updated as much as I am able to share further information.

Parking and Student Safety Around the School
Parking around Subiaco Primary School is extremely challenging, particularly during drop-off and pick-up. However, student safety must remain our highest priority.
Parents and carers are reminded that the parking area near the Hamersley Road LP1 building is clearly signed Staff Only. This area is not to be used for parent parking, quick drop-off, pick-up or turning around.
Vehicle movement in this area creates a significant safety risk for children walking near the Campbell Street entrance and around the Year 1 classrooms. Please do not use this driveway or parking area unless authorised.
We also ask all families to avoid stopping across footpaths or driveways, performing three-point turns near school entrances, stopping where visibility is reduced, or encouraging children to cross anywhere other than a safe crossing point.
Thank you to families who continue to walk, ride, scoot, or park safely and walk into school. Your care and patience help keep all children safe.

Student Illness and Hygiene Practices at School
We are currently seeing an increase in students presenting unwell at school, including symptoms consistent with gastroenteritis, influenza and other viral illnesses.
To help reduce the spread of illness, please keep your child at home if they are unwell or not able to fully participate in the school day. This includes children with vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, persistent coughing, flu-like symptoms or general lethargy. Children who have had vomiting or diarrhoea should remain at home until at least 24 hours after their last symptoms.
At school, teachers are reinforcing handwashing and hygiene routines, particularly before eating and after using the toilet. We are also checking soap supplies and continuing to monitor high-use areas across the school.
Thank you for supporting us by keeping unwell children at home. Even when symptoms appear mild, this makes a significant difference in helping protect students, staff and families.

UNLEASH Conference
Congratulations and thank you to Gemma Hayley and her 2025 Year 4 students, who participated in the Creative Schools activation at the UNLEASH Conference at Perth Zoo last Friday.
This event brought together educators, school leaders, architects, designers, facility planners and other professionals from across Australia and New Zealand to explore future-focused learning environments.
Our students helped lead participants through creative learning experiences that highlighted the Five Habits of Learning at the heart of FORM’s Creative Schools program: Imaginative, Inquisitive, Collaborative, Persistent and Disciplined.
Creative Schools is a program that partners Creative Practitioners with classroom teachers to reimagine what learning can look and feel like in Western Australian schools. We were very proud to see our students contribute so confidently and creatively to this important conversation.

Rupert Street Pocket Park Art Project
Congratulations and thank you also to Sandy Thornett and the Year 3 students in her L9 class who took part in a very special community art project on Thursday 21 May.
The Rupert Street Pocket Park Art Project is a City of Subiaco initiative that connects beautifully with our school’s history. In 1997, artists Sandra Hill and Jenny Dawson worked with Subiaco Primary School students to create the much-loved Subiaco Centenary Tiles in Postal Walk. Many former students and families still remember those tiles with great affection, and the artwork remains an important part of our community story.
This new project continues that legacy. Students worked with artist Jenny Dawson to create their own ceramic tiles, which will become part of a public artwork at the new Rupert Street Pocket Park at 203 Bagot Road.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to contribute to a lasting piece of community art. Their work will form part of the continuing story of the Waugyl’s journey and will be enjoyed by the Subiaco community for many years to come.
The students created the most exquisite tiles, and it was lovely to see their care, creativity and pride in being part of something that will leave a lasting legacy.

Warm Regards
