Newsletter 8 - May 22, 2026

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

A reminder that next weekend is a four-day long weekend for students, with a School Development Day on Friday 29 May and the WA Day public holiday on Monday 1 June.

Staff will be engaged in a full day of professional learning on Friday.

For students and families, this will be a timely opportunity to pause, recharge and reset during a very full 11-week term.

School Growth, Site Constraints and Future Planning
Subiaco Primary School is operating within a very significant and complex local context. Our school is located on a constrained inner-city site, and the surrounding area continues to experience growth, increased traffic and competing demands for community infrastructure.

I share our community’s understanding that school growth, site constraints and traffic flow are important issues that require careful and ongoing attention. These matters remain a priority in our planning, and I am continuing to work with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Works, and the City of Subiaco as discussions continue regarding longer-term planning for our school and wider community.

Representatives from the Department of Housing and Works, who work with the Department of Education on school infrastructure matters, will be meeting with me next week. This is part of the ongoing work to better understand the challenges facing our school and to consider future planning needs.

This is not a simple issue, and there are no quick or easy solutions. However, it is an important conversation, and I will continue to advocate for our students, staff and families in a constructive and informed way.

I will keep the school community updated as much as I am able to share further information.

Parking and Student Safety Around the School
Parking around Subiaco Primary School is extremely challenging, particularly during drop-off and pick-up. However, student safety must remain our highest priority.

Parents and carers are reminded that the parking area near the Hamersley Road LP1 building is clearly signed Staff Only. This area is not to be used for parent parking, quick drop-off, pick-up or turning around.

Vehicle movement in this area creates a significant safety risk for children walking near the Campbell Street entrance and around the Year 1 classrooms. Please do not use this driveway or parking area unless authorised.

We also ask all families to avoid stopping across footpaths or driveways, performing three-point turns near school entrances, stopping where visibility is reduced, or encouraging children to cross anywhere other than a safe crossing point.

Thank you to families who continue to walk, ride, scoot, or park safely and walk into school. Your care and patience help keep all children safe.

Student Illness and Hygiene Practices at School
We are currently seeing an increase in students presenting unwell at school, including symptoms consistent with gastroenteritis, influenza and other viral illnesses.

To help reduce the spread of illness, please keep your child at home if they are unwell or not able to fully participate in the school day. This includes children with vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, persistent coughing, flu-like symptoms or general lethargy. Children who have had vomiting or diarrhoea should remain at home until at least 24 hours after their last symptoms.

At school, teachers are reinforcing handwashing and hygiene routines, particularly before eating and after using the toilet. We are also checking soap supplies and continuing to monitor high-use areas across the school.

Thank you for supporting us by keeping unwell children at home. Even when symptoms appear mild, this makes a significant difference in helping protect students, staff and families.

UNLEASH Conference
Congratulations and thank you to Gemma Hayley and her 2025 Year 4 students, who participated in the Creative Schools activation at the UNLEASH Conference at Perth Zoo last Friday.

This event brought together educators, school leaders, architects, designers, facility planners and other professionals from across Australia and New Zealand to explore future-focused learning environments.

Our students helped lead participants through creative learning experiences that highlighted the Five Habits of Learning at the heart of FORM’s Creative Schools program: Imaginative, Inquisitive, Collaborative, Persistent and Disciplined.

Creative Schools is a program that partners Creative Practitioners with classroom teachers to reimagine what learning can look and feel like in Western Australian schools. We were very proud to see our students contribute so confidently and creatively to this important conversation.

Photos from the day can be viewed HERE.

Rupert Street Pocket Park Art Project
Congratulations and thank you also to Sandy Thornett and the Year 3 students in her L9 class who took part in a very special community art project on Thursday 21 May.

The Rupert Street Pocket Park Art Project is a City of Subiaco initiative that connects beautifully with our school’s history. In 1997, artists Sandra Hill and Jenny Dawson worked with Subiaco Primary School students to create the much-loved Subiaco Centenary Tiles in Postal Walk. Many former students and families still remember those tiles with great affection, and the artwork remains an important part of our community story.

This new project continues that legacy. Students worked with artist Jenny Dawson to create their own ceramic tiles, which will become part of a public artwork at the new Rupert Street Pocket Park at 203 Bagot Road.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to contribute to a lasting piece of community art. Their work will form part of the continuing story of the Waugyl’s journey and will be enjoyed by the Subiaco community for many years to come.

The students created the most exquisite tiles, and it was lovely to see their care, creativity and pride in being part of something that will leave a lasting legacy.

Photos from the workshop can be viewed HERE.

Warm Regards
Heather McNeil

P&C News

Another Fabulous Night - Mums’ Sundowner 2026
Our Subiaco Primary School Mums Sundowner, held on 16 May, was a wonderful success, with 72 mums and mother figures coming together for an evening of connection, conversation, and community spirit.

We are incredibly grateful for the generous sponsorship from James Peach at Modern Real Estate, whose support helped make the night possible. A huge thank you also to our local businesses for donating such beautiful raffle prizes — including Nosh Gourmet, Opulence Serenity, Willie Creek Pearls, and many more. Your contributions added a beautiful touch to the evening. Finally, a big thank you to the P&C Events team for their time and effort volunteering to make our events memorable!

It was a truly lovely night, and we are very pleased that so many could join us. Thank you for supporting our P&C events and helping strengthen our school community.

P&C Update Regarding Council Precinct Development Plan
P&C representatives have been present at March and April City of Subiaco Open Council Meetings to present statements and ask questions regarding the impact of the Council’s proposed redevelopment of the it’s building and gardens on Rokeby Road. The Mayor and Councillors have taken notice of our concerns. The Council have voted to proceed with planning a new council building but have gone back to the drawing board regarding options, including refurbishment of the existing building and considering an alternative location. The P&C have requested a meeting with councillors to discuss our school community’s concerns further, which has been positively received, and a date is being organised.

P&C Update Regarding Local Population Growth Impact on Subiaco Primary
With the population of the school’s intake area set to increase rapidly in the coming decade, we are advocating for careful and holistic school development planning to State government. We have met with our local member of the SLA, Jonathan Huston, who has requested and been denied a technical briefing regarding this matter. We will post updates on further developments.

Get involved with the P&C in 2026!
We are always looking for fresh faces to be part of our events team so if you’re new to the school it is the perfect opportunity to get involved in the school community with a great group of parents. Subiaco Primary has a wonderful community — we’d love you to be part of it.

General Events & Fundraising Committee members: Join a great team of volunteers to help organise our fantastic events and fundraising activities. If you have events, graphic design, communications or just enthusiasm to get involved in our school community, please contact our Events & Fundraising team at events@subiprimarypc.com.au

Reminders

Birthday Celebrations
If your child’s birthday falls on a school day and you would like bring in a treat for the class, please consider healthy, nut free alternatives. Commercially bought, individual cup cakes are acceptable but due to our healthy eating policy we would rather parents not provide chocolates or lollies.

Student Absences
Enter an Attendance Note on Compass
A parent explanation is required for all student absences. Please enter this on Compass. Parent reminders will be emailed every Monday for any unexplained absences.

Updating School Records
If your address, telephone number or email address has changed, please contact the school office.

Publications Permission
Upon enrolment, parents decide whether to give consent for their child’s name, photo or work to be published in school newsletters, school related activities, promotional material for the Department of Education and articles for the West Australian and community newspapers. This consent continues for your child while enrolled at our school. If at any stage you want to change the permission status, then you will need to notify the office in writing.

Have Your Say on a Greener Hay
The City is set to deliver a series of staged greening upgrades along Hay Street to create a safer, greener, and more welcoming place for everyone - and we'd like to hear what you think about the draft plans.

In conjunction with essential bus stop upgrades proposed by the Public Transport Authority, the long-term vision of the Hay Street Greening project is to strengthen greening outcomes on Hay Street through increased tree canopy and diversity, while also creating opportunities for additional landscaping, street furniture, and other public amenities.

Urban greening plays a vital role in building environmental resilience, and increased tree canopy can help reduce urban heat, and improve air and soil quality.

The first stage of this project focuses on Hay Street between Townshend Road and Ellen Street. Please visit Have Your Say Subiaco by Sunday 31 May to review the draft plans, read frequently asked questions, and share your thoughts.

The Hay Street Greening project is part of the City-wide 'Green Streets and Places' program, outlined in the City's Council Plan 2025-2035.

Subi Farmers Market

Saturday 23 May 2026

The mandarins are really good at the moment… sweet, juicy and easy to eat by the handful on the drive home. They also make the whole kitchen smell amazing when you peel them.

There’s also plenty of sweet potatoes around if you feel like making soup, roasting veggies or adding something hearty to dinner as the weather cools down. Bring your bags, grab a coffee and come have a wander. And yes, dogs are very welcome on the bricked areas too!
