Youth Arts Central Otago What's On - October & November

Plains of Africa (acrylic) by Safi Foale, Cromwell College. Kia ora e rangatahi! Hopefully you’ve been able to recharge your batteries over the holidays ready for a busy last term.
There are loads of musical performances coming through Central Otago during October, so if you’re into classical and chamber music then you’ll be very happy. At the end of October there’s the Cromwell Street Party and Fireworks, so gather family and friends, pack a picnic blanket and chairs and head down to the Cromwell Heritage Precinct for a night of live entertainment and street performances by the edge of Lake Dunstan. I’ll be adding more events as they crop up, so keep checking in on our youth arts calendar. Please be sure to expand this message to view all of the events on offer. CREATE: Artstart submissions open in October Artstart is a springboard for talented secondary school visual artists to show their work,
experience being a professional artist and consider a creative career. They invite young artists (aged 15-18 years) to submit their best works. A panel of judges choose the top artworks to show at a two-week exhibition, with all profits going directly to the artists. Keep an eye out for the ‘Apply Now’ button that will soon appear on their website. CELEBRATE: Supporting Safi ‘A Muster of Creatives’ exhibition opens at Alexandra’s Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery, and Cromwell College student and artist Safi Foale
will be one of the exhibitors. It will be amazing to see her technical ability and creative ideas shine beside 19 of our region’s creatives, particularly during a hectic time regarding exams and portfolio completion. Safi also received a certificate of excellence at the Dunedin School of Art Celebrate 2025 exhibition. Congratulations, Safi! We’re looking forward to seeing your work on the walls at Central Stories. WATCH: Showquest & TOI Head to the Showquest YouTube channel and be inspired by this year’s
stunning performances and impressive wearable arts garments. Look out WOW awards, these designers are already showing huge promise. Could this be you next year? READ: Stuff I’m (not) sorry for Central Otago District Libraries have some great poetry books for youth that relate to everyday experiences. Stuff I'm (not) sorry for: 99 more poems for young people and It's the sound of the thing: 100 new poems for young people are two such titles you can place a hold on and get sent from the Wānaka Library. LISTEN: NZ Young Writers Festival live recorded podcast series These informative podcasts were made during the NZ Young Writers Festival and are targeted at young writers aged 15-35.
This year’s ones cover a wide variety of topics including publishing, using journalism to build communities, and how to transition from emerging to emerged. SEE: Iconic woolshed art exhibition Don’t miss the final time the Bannockburn Arts Annual Exhibition will be held in the rustic Cairnmuir Woolshed. It’s a special experience. The exhibition showcases Bannockburn’s talented and popular local artists, alongside two guest artists. Click here for details. SHARE: Be an Inspiration We’d love you to share what you’re up to creatively. Don’t be shy to send details of your work to
the email address at the bottom of the page. Please contact us if you’re a parent and your child has achieved something special in the arts that you’d be happy to share with the community. Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa. Let us keep close together, not wide apart. Ngā mihi,
