What's On March 2015

We've had two mornings of frost in Earnscleugh which seems a tad early, but then again Sunday does herald Autumn. This is such a beautiful
time of year in Central and I suspect some of those Rail Trail bikers will be thinking about moving to God’s Zone if they could! Those of us who live here know we are truly blessed and must reflect upon this whenever we can. On Wednesday night a carload of us cruised out to Oturehua for an evening of poetry and music in the lovely informal setting of Jillian Sullivan's
new straw bale house. We had a short time to mix and mingle before the charismatic singer songwriter, Graham Waldrop, captivated us all with his incredible finger-picking skills on his latest hand-built guitar. He enlightened us as to what it takes to build such an instrument and this information heightened our appreciation for him. Jillian wooed us with musings on her new life in the Ida Valley and building her house of straw, mud and lime – all told with rhythm and a sense of humour. Local ‘Oturehuan’ and celebrated poet, Brian Turner, recited some of his more amusing works - their subtle shape-shifting quality encouraged you to be contemplative.
There are good things coming up in March. One of these is on Sunday 1st March, when a group of artists will be at Hayes Engineering Works. This will be an extra bonus to their Open Day, when they start up the historic workshop for public tours. Why not head into the Maniototo for a lovely day out. Check below for more information on this event and much more besides.
On a side note, if you feel like whetting your creative juices, the courses offered for New Art @ Old Cromwell are all full, apart from jewellery-making and cyanotype photography, so be quick. Wanaka Autumn Art School is also filling up fast too, so have look at what is on offer there as well. Regards Maxine
