LAST ONE OF THE YEAR! News from the College of Business, Government & LawWe acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga Welcome to the final edition of the College newsletter for 2024. As always, the end of another year marks closure. Not least, it marks the departure of staff who have made a long-standing contribution to the College. Our lead photo for the work features Michael Sullivan, who studies at Flinders in the 1970s and has worked here for the past 27 years. The end of the year also marks the retirement of Stephanie Eglinton-Warner, who has spent the past six years getting us ready for the landmark visit of the international accreditation team from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Thank you, Michael and Steph, for your contributions. Our stories this month include next week’s VISTA Fiesta, providing a window into teaching innovations across the College; new awards for teaching excellence and innovation; $388K of new research projects, ranging from towbar production line optimisation to Vietnam’s blue carbon market; and a raft of new publications, ranging from ‘lookism’ in the hospitality industry to the business case for dam expansion in Australia. And thanks everyone for your contributions to another landmark year for BGL. Kind regards, Professor Michael Gilding Feature StoryTales from inside: College Services As we enter the end of the year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on our achievements and significant challenges. Business, Government and Law was well represented with Greg Taylor BCom '05 awarded a distinguished alumni award for his distinguished leadership and commitment to creating a sustainable, ethical business and supporting entrepreneurs. Simon Schrapel MPolAdmin ’05 was awarded for distinguished contribution to social justice locally and nationally through welfare organisations, programs, and initiatives. You can read Greg Taylor and Simon Schrapel stories, and all other awardees here. Brendan Nelson AO BM, BS '83, DUniversity '11 was awarded an honorary doctorate from Flinders in 2011 and this year, was awarded our highest honour, the 2024 Convocation Medal. Brendan's speech was both remarkable and inspiring. Not a dry eye in the house as he reflected on the 3 institutions that have impacted his life, his parents, the Jesuits (at St Ignatius College) and Flinders University. He touched on the impact Kirsty Boden had on him, the 28-year-old nurse from Loxton and a Flinders graduate who bravely ran into danger to help other victims of the 2017 London Bridge terrorist attack, whose concern that day was not her own safety and welfare, but the safety and welfare of other human beings, her last words: ‘I am a nurse; I have to go’. There has been significant interest in obtaining the recording of Brendon’s speech – which the University is currently handling. What's on 📢Have you listened to the latest episode of JBC Dialogues? Important University Dates 📅BGL Events Update: We are excited to announce a transition to a new calendar system for BGL events. The Team Up calendar will no longer be updated with BGL-specific events, although it will continue to list important university dates such as semester dates, census, graduation, and more. Moving forward, we will be using an Outlook calendar for all BGL events. This calendar is accessible to everyone within our department, providing a centralised and streamlined way to keep track of all important BGL activities. We embrace innovative knowledge and practice to tackle the challenges of our time, with a strategic focus on technology, health and social impact.
