News from the Center

August Programming for New Faculty

This August, we will be pausing the ‘Launch’ program and instead offering two date options for ‘Teaching at Brown for the First Time’: Tuesday, August 12, 10:00-11:30 am EDT (Zoom); and Wednesday, August 27, 11:30 am -1:00 pm EDT (in person and on Zoom). Both offerings of ‘Teaching at Brown’ will cover the same content: 1) strategies for developing a Brown University syllabus and creating a motivating, inclusive, and accessible learning environment; 2) overview of Sheridan’s digital teaching resources; and 3) how to get support from the Center and other campus partners throughout the semester. The Sheridan Teaching Seminar

The Fall 2025 Sheridan Teaching Seminar is now open for registration. In this program, participants engage in an interdisciplinary community of teachers at Brown with the goal of improving their skills as instructors and their students’ learning. For program dates and to register, see the Sheridan Teaching Seminar website. Individuals will be registered for the program as space allows.

STEM Ed Friday may be on pause for the summer, but our learning community continues with Teaching Tuesdays—a series of four semi-structured conversations designed to support your planning for the fall semester. Each session offers a space to share ideas, explore challenges, and connect with colleagues across disciplines.

Dissertation and Thesis Writing Retreat

July 14-18, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

This week-long in-person writing retreat will provide dissertation and thesis writers with intentional structure and supportive community for productive writing. Brief information sessions will provide writers with strategies and resources for productive writing habits. A light breakfast, lunch, and coffee/tea will be served each day. The retreat is co-sponsored by the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning and the Graduate School. Please direct questions to graduate_writing@brown.edu.

14-Day Writing Challenge

July 21 - August 4

Are you a graduate student hoping to make progress on a writing project? Hosted by Sheridan’s Writing Center, the 14-Day Writing Challenge will run from July 21 - August 4. Participation will be asynchronous with optional in-person gatherings. The Challenge helps writers meet their goals by providing community support and accountability. Participants will be asked to share their writing goals with other participants, do their best to write for at least 30 minutes per day during the challenge, post their progress at the end of each daily writing session (participants pick their own writing session times), and cheer on other participants as they try to meet their writing goals. Summer English Language Program for Incoming International Graduate Students 

August 4-15

The Summer English Language Program (ELP) aims to equip incoming international graduate students for whom English is not a primary language with the necessary language and intercultural communicative skills to navigate their academic contexts with confidence and success. The 2025 program will be in person, Monday-Friday, August 4-15. Master’s and Ph.D. students in any discipline who are beginning on-campus academic programs in Summer or Fall 2025 can use this Google Form to apply by 11:59 pm EDT, June 1. Last Call: Fall 2025 Teaching Consultants

Applications for the Fall 2025 Teaching Consultant Program close on June 2nd. The TC Program is a semester-long learning community for graduate students and postdocs where participants deepen their knowledge of evidence-based inclusive teaching practices and develop skills in workshop facilitation, online teaching, and providing feedback. Graduate Students: Apply to be a Writing Center Associate

The Sheridan Writing Center is accepting applications for Writing Associate positions for the upcoming academic year. These paid roles are open to current Brown graduate students interested in supporting writers across disciplines and developing their teaching and tutoring practice. Associates work 3–6 hours per week, receive training in inclusive and anti-racist writing pedagogy, and join a vibrant community of educators. All disciplines are welcome. Junior Faculty Teaching Fellows

Applications for the Junior Faculty Teaching Fellows Program are now open. We welcome Lecturers and Assistant Professors to join this learning community centered around evidence-based pedagogy in higher education. To learn more and submit an application, visit the Junior Faculty Teaching Fellows website. Applications for the 2025-2026 program year must be received no later than September 1, 2025.

 

Recruiting Mentors for CIRTL’s Teaching-as-Research Program

CIRTL@Brown will soon be launching its Teaching-As-Research (TAR) program! TAR involves the use of research methods to develop and implement teaching practices that advance the learning experiences and outcomes of students and teachers. These projects are carried out by graduate students and postdocs, under the mentorship of faculty members and instructors. If you would be interested in being a TAR mentor or learn more about the TAR program, email Dr. Logan Gin (logan_gin@brown.edu).

Designing and Teaching for Online

This online self-paced Canvas tutorial guides Brown instructors through the design or redesign of an online or hybrid course. There are three pathways (Developing an Online Course, Structuring an Online Course in Canvas, and Teaching an Online Course) that allow instructors to work through the sections at their own pace based on their own needs and interests.
