SurPASS Tip of the Month

Consolidate Your eRA Commons Accounts with New Feature

NOTE: Multiple eRA Commons accounts can negatively impact the submission of NIH/DOD/NSF applications.

A new eRA Commons enhancement allows users to consolidate multiple accounts into a single Multi-Factor Authentication capable linked set of credentials to help streamline and reduce the burden of managing multiple accounts. Beginning on May 18, 2026, upon login to eRA Commons, all users will be presented with a window to request the consolidation of multiple accounts into a single account.

Users with a single account may select the “Don’t Show Me This Again” button to dismiss the window.

Users with multiple accounts are encouraged to consolidate their accounts as soon as possible by selecting the “Submit A Request To Consolidate” button to initiate the account consolidation process. After consolidation, users are presented with a screen to define the organization and the role type for which they are acting, including selection of an optional default setting. Learn more in this quick tutorial and earlier post.

Additionally, using LOGIN.gov to access your eRA Commons, myNCBI, and SciENcv accounts is the preferred method.

Understanding MCW IRB Fees

The Medical College of Wisconsin Institutional Review Board (IRB) assesses fees for review in several situations involving industry-sponsored and multi-site research studies. Investigators and study teams should be aware of these fees during study planning and budget development to help avoid delays during activation.

IRB fees are assessed in the following scenarios:

Standard review of any industry-sponsored research project that meets the NIH definition of a clinical trial
When MCW relies on a non-MCW IRB for review of an industry-sponsored research project
When the MCW IRB serves as the single IRB (sIRB) for a multi-site study

Both NIH policy and the Common Rule from the Office for Human Research Protections mandate sIRB review for most federally funded multi-site studies. MCW sIRB review fees apply regardless of the funding source.
