A new reality TV show on the BBC features Wim Hof (the “Iceman”) taking celebrities through various challenges in sub-zero temperatures. Extreme athlete Hof claims that a “cold shower a day keeps the doctor away”. But is he right?

We asked Lindsay Bottoms, a sports scientist, to look at the evidence. It turns out that there haven’t been many robust studies on the benefits of a cold shower, but here is what we do know.

We also take a look at how colonialism has exacerbated climate change, and why Americans on both sides of the political divide are gripped by the war in Ukraine (despite not having any boots on the ground).
