Click here Law School Bulletin December 2022🎄Welcome to the December bulletin 🎄 With Christmas almost upon us, I would like to congratulate you on reaching the end of what has been a busy first term! This month’s bulletin includes several study tips to help you prepare for assessments in January, and we are delighted to shine a spotlight on Dr Craig Newbery-Jones who has recently taken on the role of Director of Education and Student Experience. We also look ahead to 2023 when Exeter Law School will celebrate its 100th birthday, so look out for more exciting news on celebratory events in the new year! But before we think too much about the next year ahead, I would like to encourage everyone to take the opportunity for some well-earned rest over the festive period. Whether you are staying local to Exeter or travelling further afield, I hope you have a great time with those closest to you and wish you all a wonderful Christmas break. Professor Joasia Luzak, Head of Law School SpotlightThis month our Spotlight is on our new Director of Education and Student Experience, We are delighted to announce that Dr Craig Newbery-Jones has taken up the role in the Law School, taking over from Professor Imogen Moore. Craig has been acting as Imogen’s deputy since March 2022 and is excited to takeover leadership of the education team. Craig said: “It is a real honour to act as Director of Education and Student Experience in such a fantastic school and at such an exciting time. Throughout my career, I have always placed innovative learning and teaching, and an excellent student experience at the heart of everything that I do. I was previously Deputy Director of Education at the University of Leeds School of Law and then here at Exeter Law School. I have thoroughly enjoyed supporting Imogen in her role and look forward to continuing the great work she has undertaken. I look forward to meeting more of you over the next few weeks. But before that, I hope you all have a wonderful and restful break.” You will see a lot more of Craig over the coming months, so make sure you stop and say hello. Education Matters Support and information during the winter break Many university services remain available during the vacation period, other than on University closure days. Of course response times may be a bit slower. Whether you are staying in Exeter over the Christmas period or not, you may find the following link helpful: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/students/christmasatexeter/ Many staff will take some of their annual leave during the winter vacation period so please don’t expect all colleagues to be available at all times. Staff use automatic replies on their email to let you know if they are away and when they will return. Answers to a lot of questions can be found on module ELE pages, via the Law School ELE Gateway, or on the University and Law School websites. Thinking ahead There is no obligation to be in Exeter before term starts unless you have an in-person assessment (this will not apply to many law students). (All students are expected to be in Exeter from the start of term.) If you aren’t in Exeter when assessments are due, remember that it is your responsibility to check any time differences, and ensure you have the technology and connections you need to submit your work as required. For more information on submitting assessed work, please see the Law School ELE Gateway, under ‘Assessment and Feedback’. Seasonal Study Tips from Seasoned Scholars The end of this term inevitably brings thoughts of January assessments as well as lots of chocolate. With that in mind, we asked some colleagues to offer a few study tips and you can read them here with themes including Consolidation and Revision, Preparing for Assessments and Finding a Balance. Enjoy! Your Voice Student RepsThe academic student reps are passionate about representing you, and are there to talk to about what's working and what you think could be improved. This will help the Law School provide what you need from your course. Reach out to Taranne Kendon, Edward Barradell and Misturah Sonaike who are your department officers. If you are interested in becoming a student Academic Representative, you can find out more at the Student Guild website here. Of course, you can provide input in different ways too - see the Law School ELE Gateway for how to get involved and who to contact. Our Centenary!2023 promises to be an exciting year for the Law School as we get ready to mark a centenary of law study at Exeter. Many great legal minds have passed through Exeter. Our alumni have helped shape the law and led the profession with great distinction, while others also used their legal training to build successful careers in other professions. Our research has changed the landscape of legal practice and impacted society in and beyond the UK. Our law community now stretches across the globe, with students coming to study at Exeter from across the world at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Throughout 2023 we will be celebrating the achievements of the past 100 years and set out our vision for the Law School going forward. We will be hosting several in person events, in Exeter, but also in London and abroad to give our law community the opportunity to celebrate with fellow students, academics and alumni. Here's a picture from the last 100 years, Amory Building under construction in the early 1970's. Opportunities and EventsBelow are just a few of the many things available for you to join in with or attend. Click here for more opportunities - other events provided by the University and external providers. We will regularly update this page with new items so save the link. Assessment Centres Insight As part of an application process you may be invited to an assessment centre. But what happens at one, and how can you gain experience of one? AllAboutLaw have put together an individual exercise practice test to help you prepare for an assessment day. In it you get to review a contract, provide your answers and then have them graded. Whilst all law firms will have their own way of assessing you, this gives you an insight into how it might be structured. All-School Mooting Competition 2023 The Law School and University of Exeter Law Society are pleased to announce a joint school-wide mooting competition to take place next term. This competition will be open to all undergraduate and post-graduate taught students (including students who are not members of the Society). Further details will be provided early in the next term. In the meantime, if you wish to register your interest please complete the form on the link below. If you have any further questions, please email mooting@exeter.ac.uk Making a journey over the winter break? Why not download an episode or two of the Career Zone podcast. Society NewsEach month we’re going to take a look at one of the Students' Guild Societies you can join whilst you’re at Exeter. This month we’re focusing on EILS, the Exeter International Law Society. EILS has over 100 members and brings people together from a variety of disciplines, not just law. If you’re considering an international career, or you’re studying language alongside law this society will provide you with opportunities to socialise and network with different undergraduates and alumni. In the last term they have organised fortnightly gatherings helping year one students to settle into the Law School, enjoyed a trip to Winter Wonderland and hosted an informal networking opportunity with an international law company. EILS has also worked with other societies such as with the Women and Law Society to host events including the Winter Wonderland Ball. As well as the chance for get-togethers, the society is a great place to ask questions, gain support, hear other’s experiences and make friendships across other study areas. Their languages officer speaks 6 languages so is a great person to connect with, for example if applying abroad and wanting to check your international application. The society strives to make all people feel welcome. Co President Frazer Pyne explained more about their new ‘family scheme’. “Each family is made up of two ‘parents’ who are committee members and then each member that signs up to the scheme is put into a family as ‘children’. It’s just another way for members to meet new people and engage with the society. Before social events families meet for drinks etc. Families also provide a great way for students in different years of study to mix and support each other through their studies. We have non drinking families too for students that don’t feel comfortable being around alcohol so that everyone feels included. It’s never too late to sign up to a family and if students send us a message we are always happy to allocate them into a new group.” If you would like to join the society, hop onto their Students' Guild page here where you can also see links to their social media.
