What's on in Central Otago - August

National Poetry Day was founded in 1994 by William Sieghart - British entrepreneur, author and publisher. His mission was to celebrate excellence in
poetry, increase its audience and make the art an accessible and fun experience for all participants. The day has grown in popularity and is now celebrated in communities throughout the world. National Poetry Day falls on the last Friday of August in New Zealand and this year we have decided to hold Central Otago's very own National Poetry Day Event.
The Central Otago District Arts Trust, Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery and Radio Central are excited to announce the 2017 National Poetry Day celebrations. From now until the 24th of August we would like to invite Central Otago people of all ages to submit a poem (their own, or their favourite poem), on the theme of 'Water' to Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. These works will be read on local radio during the lead up to The Poetry Event, and put on display in the Community Gallery at Central Stories for the public to view. You can facebook message, email or deliver your poems to Central Stories. This is a great
opportunity to get your views on 'Water' into the public arena and/ or just have some fun. The Poetry Event will be held on the 25th August at 5.30pm at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. Come along and hear local poets, politicians and characters read their favourite poem on the theme of 'Water'. Bring your family and friends along for a casual and entertaining evening - entry is free. The Central Otago District Arts Trust (CODAT) will be holding our Annual General Meeting on the 17th of August at 6pm, at the Alexandra Community House. The evening is a good opportunity to learn more about what CODAT has achieved in the last year and the projects we have in store for the next 12 months. We are excited to announce that our guest speaker for the evening will be prizewinning Central Otago author Kyle Mewburn. We look forward to seeing you there.
Remember that entries for the Central Otago Arts Gold Awards 2017 close at 10pm on the 9th of August. For further details visit www.centralstories.com. Have a great August everyone.
