Competent military commanders always want to know their political masters’ goals in any armed conflict. Before the Russian military invaded Ukraine, Vladimir Putin made it clear that he wanted to oust the government in Kyiv and “denazify and demilitarise” their neighbour.
This was always going to mean Russian boots on the ground. But to achieve their objectives, occupy Ukraine and apprehend and neutralise resistance, the Russian military needed first to knock out all of Ukraine’s defence systems. It didn’t. Now it seems likely there will be a protracted and vicious battle for Ukraine’s cities while the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, continues to effectively rally his people and win international support.
Meanwhile, Putin has remained remarkably popular at home – despite his increasingly repressive style of governing. But for how long? He is now facing growing resistance to the war among ordinary Russians.
