    Researcher-led Initiative Funding Awards 2024 - NOW OPEN!

    Deadline is Friday 26 January 2024 (12 noon).

    Early Career Researchers and Postgraduate Researchers can now apply for this scheme to support hybrid, remote or in-person training and development activities around the following themes:

    • Developing an engaged research culture;
    • Leadership;
    • Communication;
    • Wellbeing.

    The Researcher Development Core Training Programme for ECRs is a development programme specifically designed for Early Career Research staff (ie, staff on research contracts grades E to G), across all campuses of the University of Exeter. Upcoming courses:-

    1:2:1 Confidential Careers Appointments with Kenneth Howgill – Researcher Development Careers Coach (ECRs)

    Unsure of your future career direction either within Academia or beyond Academia? Kenneth Howgill, (Careers Coach for Researcher Development and Research Culture), is available to offer 1:2:1 Career coaching appointments for ECRs.  50 minute online appointments are available for you to book on by clicking here.

    Learning and Development Opportunities: University of Exeter and Beyond

    Paid Opportunity to Test 'Discovery' SearchTool

    Can you help to improve online visibility for ECRs/PGRs by taking part in a pilot for Discovery, a new online search tool?  

    You will be renumerated for your time at a rate of £19.70 per hour.

    The pilot forms part of the ‘Profiles Project’ which is a University-wide project that will overhaul current staff and PGR profiles system.  Initially, participation to test the search tool ‘Discovery’ is required, which will transform how searchable our academics, PGRs and PS staff are, including making it easier for potential PGRs to find a supervisor.     What does this entail? - Via Teams, there will be two sessions:

    Session #1: Managing and updating your profile in Symplectic Elements - Thursday 18 January  2024 (2 pm - 2.30 pm) (+15min to complete survey).
    Session #2: Using Discovery - Thursday 25 January 2024 (2 pm - 2.30 pm) (+15min to complete survey)

    AI UK 2024

    Tuesday 19 March - Wednesday 20 March 2024

    AI UK is back in-person and online for its fourth edition!  AI UK is a showcase of how data science and AI can be applied to society's biggest challenges, with a focus on The Alan Turing Institute's grand challenges, defence and security, environment and sustainability, and transformation of healthcare. The stage programme and exhibition of demonstrations will be announced closer to the event, keep an eye on the AI UK website for the latest updates.

    Venice International University

    Venice International University (VIU) will offer a wide range of Intensive Graduate Activities in 2024.  Students and scholars from the member Universities (of which University of Exeter is one) are encouraged to explore the programmes on offer in 2024 and apply early to guarantee their place.  The programmes are the outcome of intense collaboration among the Universities and have been developed based on the mandate of the member Universities through the VIU Academic Council.

    ECR/PGR Creative Writing Group

    Wednesdays (5.30 pm - 6.30 pm) on MS Teams.

    This creative writing group is for PGRs/ECRs. The group is run by Theology students and welcomes all interested in creative writing regardless of research subject or writing experience. There will be opportunities to write to prompts and to receive feedback on creative pieces. Sessions take place weekly on Microsoft Teams on Wednesdays between 5.30 pm - 6.30 pm.

    Focus Space - Improve your Productivity!

    Do you find it difficult to find time to think, write, or plan your next paper/grant?

    Then join our Focus Space sessions, held on Mondays and Thursdays 10 am – 12.30 pm!

    These sessions are held online, via Teams, and are facilitated by a group member. We are a supportive group of colleagues from across the University at all career stages, with the shared goal of wanting some space to focus on our research and writing.  You do not need to join for the full session, and you can join a session when it is convenient for you.  Click on this link https://bit.ly/3MfhOEi to join (your request will be approved by the researcher development team).  Alternatively, you can email researcherdevelopment@exeter.ac.uk to ask to join the Teams channel.  Sessions are open to all academics at all career stages.

    Research Grants, Funding & Competitions

    NERC Urgency Funding

    No closing date.

    Apply for funding to respond quickly to transient and unexpected scientific opportunities.

    These may be events affecting the environment created by the occurrence of sporadic natural events such as:

    • earthquakes
    • droughts
    • floods
    • ephemeral events in ecosystems.

    You must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for NERC funding.

    GW4 Building Communities Generator Fund now open.

    Deadline: Monday 5 February 2024

    The GW4 Building Communities Generator Fund is open for applications, offering up to £20K for 6-month projects, supporting both the creation of new GW4 communities and the development of the strongest ideas emerging from existing communities.

    The fund is an open call in any area of research or innovation, with the purpose of addressing a major research or societal challenge.

    To be eligible to apply, research communities must involve academic partners from at least 3 of the GW4 institutions. Interdisciplinarity is encouraged and projects should look to engage both academic and external partners.

    The Royal Society - Research Grants

    Opening Call : Wednesday 31 January 2024
    Deadline : Wednesday 27 March 2024

    This scheme provides ‘seed corn’ funding for up to 18 months for independent researchers. The Royal Society has now increased the maximum amount available to £70,000 to enable researchers to build their research programme and purchase essential piece of equipment.  Your research must be within the Royal Society’s remit of natural sciences (breakdown of subjects groups and areas).

    Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024

    Deadline date : Wednesday 11 September 2024

    MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD and who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility.

    Research Culture

    Research Culture Enablers' Network

    In response to the increasing emphasis on creating positive research cultures within Universities, The University of Warwick have set up a Research Culture Enablers Network. The aims include co-ordinating initiatives and sharing best practice across the sector. The network have identified a number of priority areas and colleagues from the Researcher Development and Research Culture Team will be meeting with Dr Rika Nair, Research Culture Manager at the University of Warwick, to find out more and discuss our progress in this area.     Exeter University - Early Career Researcher Networks (ECRNs)

    The Network Meetings are designed to help support our Early Career Researchers in the beginning stages of their career. The ECRNs are designed to help raise awareness of new developments in a particular field: new tools, processes, leaders, training programs, and services. They are also an opportunity for collaborative problem solving and to get advice from your peers.     Watch and learn: Horizon Europe for ECRs

    Wednesday 17 January 2024 (12 noon - 12.45 pm)
    Online via Zoom

    This session will provide an overview of Horizon Europe and dispell myths, with an ECR lens. Horizon Europe is the European programme for research and innovation. Following the UK association to Horizon Europe, ECRs based in the UK can apply across the range of opportunities, from fellowships to collaborative research that are all available to ECRs. Applicants do not have to be experienced to apply or hold a grant.  ECRs will be equipped with information on the programme and tips on what to do to get involved with success.

    Early Career Researchers and Interdisciplinarity in the Medical Humanities - South West

    Wednesday 21 February 2024 (11.30 am - 3.30 pm)
    Room F310, Fusion Building, Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University, 52 Gillett Road, Poole, BH12 5BF

    This in-person ECR-focused event brings together researchers in Medical and Health Humanities at Bournemouth from across the faculties of Health & Social Science, Media & Communication and Science & Technology, inviting them to highlight and address the main challenges of working within this varied and interdisciplinary field. It will feature an expert roundtable and open discussion, followed by breakout groups and opportunity for networking activity for ECRs. Reasonable travel and accommodation can be provided by the British Academy.

    Short Survey on Research Communication

    As part of a University-wide project looking at how individuals and teams can be supported to get the most out of social media for research communication, colleagues in Research Services would like anyone interested in or involved with research communications to complete a short survey. By doing so, you will be contributing to recommendations for resources and strategies which can potentially improve and amplify communications about the amazing research taking place across the University.

    Become a Colleague Mental Health Champion

    Following a comprehensive review of the Colleague Mental Health Champions initiative, the University is now looking to appoint 30 new volunteers to become Colleague Mental Health Champions to promote positive mental health and wellbeing within the University community. This role will be a key opportunity to make a difference and positively support your colleagues’ mental wellbeing.
