September 2023 NewsSO Few Consider Adoption They may not realize -- they can choose life, even if they are not ready to parent. We all play a role in encouraging women to choose adoption. Remember, any young woman is more likely to consider it when an adult she admires suggests it. Unplanned Good Policy Work We are pretty excited about our work in this area. We'll be introducing legislation in the 'trigger law' States during the next legislative session. The goal is to remove obstacles and make choosing adoption easier for the women who are considering placing their babies with adoptive parents. Placing for adoption is *so* difficult, let's not make it any harder than need be! The Birthmother Care ActThe Birthmother Care Act, our proposed legislation, would make it easier to choose adoption by: 1. Ensuring all high school students know about the option of closed and open adoptions. In any health ed / sex ed class in Idaho schools, when contraception is explained, adoption will get at least equal classtime alongside the other pregnancy options of abortion and (single) parenting. Current practices of open adoption (in contrast to closed) will be explained whenever contraception is explained. 2. Leaving adoption to the trained experts. Infant adoption must be done by a licensed child-placing agency, not facilitators, for the protection of the birthmother (and the prospective adoptive parents). 3. Making relinquishment less traumatic than it currently is. Change Idaho Statue that requires ‘All surrenders must be made before a judge or magistrate’. to 4. Offering counseling sessions pre- and post-placement to therapy to ensure that the adoption is the will of the birthmother (no coercion involved), and to help her process & cope. ... and more!
