Dear Parents and Carers,
We are delighted to share that today’s National Walk Safely to School Day was a wonderful success!
This nationwide initiative encourages students, families, and school communities to embrace the benefits of walking to school — promoting healthier lifestyles, safer road habits, and care for our environment. We are proud to be part of this important movement, helping to foster lifelong habits that support wellbeing and sustainability.
This morning, 12 teachers and I were joined by a fantastic turnout of families as we walked together along our designated routes to school. The sense of community spirit was truly inspiring!
Adding to the excitement, we were thrilled to welcome two West Coast Eagles players, who brought a special surprise: a Walk to School tattoo for every child! Their presence added an extra spark to the morning and made the event even more memorable for our students.
It was a morning filled with smiles, fresh air, and meaningful connection — a wonderful way to start the day. We’re so pleased to have seen such strong participation from our school community, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined in and helped make the day such a success. Click HERE for photos.
We also thank those who helped supervise and support our Walking School Buses, as well as families who took time to talk with their children about the importance of road safety and active travel. And of course, many parents and staff enjoyed a coffee from the coffee van in the staff carpark.
If you have any feedback, photos to share, or are interested in helping with future events, feel free to reach out emma-louise.harrison@education.wa.edu.au.
The Premier’s Telethon Challenge
We’re excited to share that our school is participating in the Premier’s Telethon Challenge, a fantastic opportunity for students to take meaningful action by raising money to support sick, vulnerable, and disadvantaged children across Western Australia.
As part of this initiative, we’ve been invited by the Channel 7 Telethon Trust to take part in a special "mock-up fundraiser" for Channel 7 filming. This footage will help promote the Premier’s Telethon Challenge and will also be aired during the Telethon Weekend broadcast.
In support of this, we’ll be holding a REAL Book Sale Fundraiser during Week 5 of Term 3 (Book Week). This will be a student-led initiative with whole school involvement, and we aim to raise as much as we can for this important cause.
To meet the filming deadline, our mock-up fundraiser will take place on Thursday, 29 May.
For this filming, we’ll need 10–15 students dressed in bright, bold, and colourful book character costumes to "buy books" from a stall while being filmed.
If your child has a costume and would like to take part, please contact me at: heather.mcneil@education.wa.edu.au.
In the coming days, I’ll also be asking teachers to nominate students who may be confident delivering a short line on camera. I’ll record trial footage on an iPhone and forward it to Channel 7, who will select the student to be featured. The line to be delivered is: “The Premier’s Telethon Challenge is on! It’s all about kids helping kids. Join the challenge at your school today.”
Thank you for supporting us to empower students to give back and make a real difference.
Subiaco PS has been registered on the Premier’s Telethon Challenge page: Subiaco Primary School in Premier's Telethon Challenge.
Training for New Board Members
On Tuesday evening, our three newly appointed board members joined existing members to participate in a comprehensive training session hosted at Hollywood Primary School. This 2-hour workshop was facilitated by a principal trainer and is designed specifically to support new school council and board members in understanding their roles and responsibilities.
The training covered key areas including:
-
Foundations of effective school governance
-
Where school boards fit in the broader governance structure
-
Key requirements and expectations for board members
The session provided valuable insights into how board members can contribute positively to the school's strategic direction, ensure compliance with Department of Education policies, and represent the interests of the school community.
Workshops like these are essential in helping new members step confidently into their governance roles and ensure they are well-equipped to support the school’s continued success.
We appreciate the commitment of our board members and look forward to their contributions in shaping the future of our school.
Warm regards,
Heather McNeil

Subi Blooms x Gathera

We am very proud to share that our students were recently invited to take part in Subi Blooms x Gather – A Beautiful Community Event.
Several classes from Subiaco Primary School contributed to the event by creating stunning floristry paper for the Subi Blooms x Gather Festival. Students worked both individually and collaboratively across year levels, using a variety of mediums such as paint sticks and black marker to produce bold, vibrant designs.
These beautifully crafted papers were later used to wrap bouquets made from dismantled festival flower displays. It was a perfect and meaningful end to Mother’s Day weekend, with hundreds of flowers repurposed and saved from landfill.
On Monday, five of our students had the honour of delivering these bouquets to new mothers and nurses at King Edward Memorial Hospital and St. John of God Subiaco — a heartwarming gesture that truly captured the spirit of community and care.

Staff Meeting – Mathematics and Understanding ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder
Mathematics and Understanding ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Process, Considerations, and Best Practice.
Whole school professional learning is crucial to ensure we continually build the capacity of our staff with current, evidence-based practice. During our recent staff meeting, the Mathematics Committee leaders, Ms Shane and Ms Deacon, presented Part Two of our familiarisation with the Version 9 Mathematics Curriculum. Staff were asked why it is important to teach mathematical vocabulary. After many answers, Ms Shane went to the data, highlighting that multistep worded problems are a focus for whole-school improvement. Homework from the previous staff meeting saw year levels compare and cross-reference vocabulary lists to ensure we use current and year-level appropriate mathematical language with students. With many changes to the updated curriculum, this valuable exercise generated deep conversations amongst colleagues. As we move forward, please keep an eye out for vocabulary walls that
will begin forming across the school, making learning visible.
Following this, we welcomed Ms Warrener, our School Psychologist, who presented - Understanding ADHD and ASD: Process, Considerations, and Best Practice. This highly informative session was based on the DSM-5, a handbook used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental disorders. Ms Warrener explained the criteria, pathways and implications for ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. A review of the school's Students at Educational Risk Flowchart to show the process and requirements if a staff member is concerned about a student. Early intervention in primary school is crucial for maximising student potential and preventing adverse long-term outcomes.
We are fortunate and thankful to have experienced staff who passionately present to staff to drive better outcomes for students.

Fear-Less Triple P (Positive Parenting Program)
|
 |
| |
Use positive parent strategies to help your child (aged 6 – 14) manage and reduce anxious feelings.
Is this your family? Your child has anxiety that is affecting their everyday life. It may stop them, or your whole family, from doing certain activities. Your child may be worried a lot of the time. You may swing between reassuring them and telling them to face their fears. You may feel like you’ve tried everything and possibly may be anxious yourself. If parenting a child with anxiety is affecting your life and you’d like to help your child worry less and be more confident, Fear-Less Triple P can help.
Fear-Less Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) is an internationally recognised program that helps you to set a good example of coping with anxiety, coach children to become more emotionally resilient, and develop your own toolbox of strategies. Fear-Less Triple P encourages you to use practical strategies with all family members, not just the child who seems especially anxious. In this way, the Fear-Less Triple P program helps the whole family to reduce unnecessary fear and anxiety.
We are very pleased to inform you that our school psychologist, Emily Warrener will be holding a seminar here at Subiaco Primary School on Wednesday 21 May, 6.00pm - 8.00pm in the Upper Hall.
The seminar will provide you with an overview of what anxiety is and what causes it, and a tip sheet with practical strategies you can try at home.
This invitation will also be extended to parent groups at our local schools. Please click on the link to book your seats. www.trybooking.com/DASZY
Thank you again for your ongoing support and partnership!

Year 6 Robogals Visit
|
 |
| |
Last week the Year 6 girls were honoured by a wonderful visit from Robogals. They taught us about the different types of engineers. We then got to the fun part - coding a robot and controlling it! We did challenges and even a sumo game with the robots. Overall it was an experience not to forget and it definitely encouraged many of us to give coding and engineering a try. Darlene.
I really enjoyed coding the robots and learning about different types of engineering. This was a really fun incursion that I really want more of in the future. We used Lego robots and coded them to do different actions including competing with each other to keep our robot in the square. Suniti.
It was so much fun when we got to use Lego robots and learn all about engineering and the different types of engineers. Akanksha.
I really enjoyed this experience of Robogals as it intrigued me into being an environmental engineer when I grow up. Kiara.
Robogals was awesome! We learned loads about engineering, robots and team work. Since it was for girls, we enjoyed it more than ever! Rakshana.
