What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - April

Following the success of last year’s Creative Entrepreneurs workshop series, and the
Muster of Creatives exhibition that followed, the Central Otago District Arts Trust (CODAT) is excited to launch its 2026 Literary Series. Across the year, we will welcome a range of celebrated and much-loved authors to Central Otago for a rich series of workshops, presentations, and conversations exploring all aspects of literature. Whether you’re an aspiring writer, an avid reader, or simply curious about the craft, this series offers something for everyone. The programme will culminate in the much-anticipated return of our popular Cover to Cover event later in the year. Kicking off the series in April, we are thrilled to host Canadian writer, songwriter, and poet Laura Williamson, now proudly based in Central Otago. Laura is the creative editor and co-founder of "1964: mountain culture/aotearoa", a regular contributor to "Kia Ora" (Air New Zealand’s in-flight magazine), and former editor of "Spoke" magazine. Her book, "The Bike and Beyond: Life on Two Wheels in
Aotearoa New Zealand", alongside her extensive work in journalism, songwriting, teaching, poetry tours, and events, reflects her deep commitment to storytelling and her passion for Central Otago. Join us on Thursday 16 April at Cromwell Presbyterian Church for an engaging presentation and hands-on workshop: Presentation 9 am - 12 noon.
Laura will share practical insights into the world of magazine writing. From identifying the right markets and understanding different types of publications, to pitching ideas, navigating article proposals versus spec submissions, and the realities of print versus online publishing. She’ll also reflect on her own career journey and the development of 1964, offering valuable perspectives on working with editors and building a writing life. Workshop 1pm - 4pm.
This interactive session will focus on crafting compelling magazine articles. Participants will explore structure, tone, point of view, and how to tailor writing for specific audiences and publications. Laura will guide you through shaping strong openings and endings, refining word choice, and applying practical editing techniques to prepare your work for submission. You are welcome to attend either the presentation, the workshop, or both. Whether you’re looking to break into magazine writing or simply refine your skills, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn from an experienced and inspiring writer. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Email [email protected] to secure your spot. All are welcome, no matter your age or level of experience. We look forward to seeing you there!
