News from the College of Business, Government and Law

We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga

Welcome to the July edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter.

Our July newsletter features many milestones. Professor Andrew Parkin and Professor Don DeBats are departing their current positions in Government after more than 100 years of service between them. Both leave a profound legacy. Meantime, our research and educator spotlights for the month feature Dr Josh Holloway and Dr Hongyi Liang respectively – both recent appointments in Government.

In June we held a graduation ceremony at Nankai University in Tianjin for almost 1600 graduates and their families, including those who completed their qualifications during the covid years of 2020, 2021, and 2022. It was awesome!

We also celebrated 10 years of Flinders Legal Centre, which provides a unique work experience opportunity for our students and an important service for our community. It was a wonderful evening which brought together alumni from the past decade who have taught and learned through the centre.

Our newsletter also features an update on our new city campus at Festival Plaza. Our newsletter provides an opportunity to reflect upon our journey – where we have come from, where we are, and where we are going.

Kind regards,
Michael

Professor Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

A long-awaited graduation ceremony in China

Flinders University and Nankai University Joint Master Degree Programs Graduation Ceremony 2023

The impressive photo above is from a graduation ceremony in Nankai University in Tianjin, China. Flinders University's partnership with Nankai is now in its 23rd year, and the joint Master Degree programs - the Master of Arts (International Relations in Economy and Trade) (MAIRET), the Master of Hospital Administratio (MHA) and the Master of Educational Leadership and Management (MELM) - remain one of the university's most important international education collaborations.

Last week’s ceremony was particularly special as it was the first time a graduation ceremony has been held for these joint degrees since 2019. Alongside Flinders' latest 560 graduates from the class of 2023 were those who had graduated in absentia in 2020, 2021 and 2022. More than two thirds of those earlier cohorts chose to attend the celebration, and so the ceremony had almost 1,600 graduates crossing the stage.

Flinders Legal Centre celebrates 10 years

We recently celebrated 10 years of the Flinders Legal Centre!

To make the most of this milestone, Flinders Legal Centre welcomed staff, alumni, supporters, and funders to its premises, providing an opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new connections, and reflect on the accomplishments of the Centre over the past decade.

Over 350 Flinders Law students have undertaken clinical legal education placements, enabling Flinders Legal Centre to provide at least $3.5 million worth of free legal services to the community – a significant contribution to increasing access to justice.

Farewell to two Flinders stalwarts

L-R: Professor Don DeBats and Professor Andrew Parkin

Together, Professor Andrew Parkin and Professor Don DeBats have worked at Flinders University for over 100 years. Over their respective 50+ years of service, they have profoundly shaped the teaching, research and engagement of Government at Flinders, and both leave a substantial legacy.

Although Don and Andrew will no longer teach into our Government program, they will continue to have an important association with Flinders, through their research and engagement. We thank them for their remarkable decades of commitment to the University.

The latest on our city campus

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students), Professor Romy Lawson, recently provided a quarterly update on our new city campus. You can watch it here.

In this update, Professor Lawson asked staff to participate in a
short anonymous survey to help understand the effectiveness of updates for the new city campus, and asks for any ideas for improvements or general feedback.

Also in this month's Flinders at Festival Plaza update: learn about the next pop-up showroom, an opportunity to try out the new teaching space technology, and how to join the Change Community. There are exciting times ahead!
