Welcome to the December newsletter

Dear

As 2024 draws to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your continued support, which is shown in so many ways. We've loved welcoming many of you back to campus and catching up with you at reunions over the last 12 months.

The University is very proud this year to have installed our new Chancellor, John Studzinski CBE, and to have opened the doors to our new Leeds Trinity University City Campus in the heart of the city centre.

We wish all of our alumni community and families a wonderful festive break and send our very best wishes for the New Year.

The University will be closed from Friday 20 December 2024 at 5:00pm and will reopen on Thursday 2 January 2025.

University Challenge Christmas special

We are incredibly proud to have an alumni team representing Leeds Trinity at University Challenge 2024. This December, the show returns to BBC Two and iPlayer, chaired by host Amol Rajan. 14 universities will go head-to-head to claim the title of Christmas champions.

The four alumni representing Leeds Trinity are: Harpz Kaur, DJ and presenter; Mobeen Azhar, documentary filmmaker and presenter; Lauren Layfield, TV and radio presenter; and Dorothy Koomson, novelist. All four are also Honorary Fellows of the University.

Our Leeds Trinity alumni team are scheduled to be shown on BBC2 at 8:30pm on Friday 27 December.

Congratulations winter graduates

One of the nicest ways to end each year is by celebrating with our winter graduates. We have just enjoyed two days of graduations at the Leeds Playhouse. See more pictures on the University and Alumni Facebook pages.

You can also read about some of our latest graduates on our news page.

Publishing success for Rosemary

Congratulations to alumna Rosemary MacLean (English and Writing, 2018 and current MA Creative Writing student) who recently celebrated having her first absurdist/satirical play script published in issue 11 of Emanations, alongside experimental writers from all over the world.

Her submission was an extract from a play she wrote for her Rock Band entitled 'Realitease: A Cultural Detritus Revue'. Read more.

25 years of Tea on the Landing

We are very proud to celebrate that Tea on the Landing has been going on for 25 years. The weekly event brings people together over free tea and other drinks, as well as snacks.

Led by the Chaplaincy team and supported by the wider University, Tea on the Landing has developed into a popular event which celebrates community and connection. Read more.

Featured alumni – Elian Beaumont

This year, one of our highlights was catching up with and interviewing 2024 Film graduate Elian Beaumont. We first met Elian as a final year student after they won a Royal Television Society award for their film Strangers. As we approach the end of 2024, this film has been viewed over 2.2 million times on their YouTube channel.

Shortly after graduating, another of Elian’s films Find Me won an Exceptional Achievement award at the 2024 MDIF festival. This was followed by an award for the film Craven, which scooped Best Drama at The 2024 Graddies Awards.

We were delighted to have Elian back as one of our panellists during Journalism and Media Week 2024. Students were able to hear Elian’s incredible success story and all the hard work that has gone into it.

You can view all of Elian’s films at FilmFreeway and find out more on their alumni profile.
