Later this year, on May 6, King Charles will officially be crowned Charles III at Westminster Abbey. When Queen Elizabeth died, Charles immediately became the King of the United Kingdom. He also became the head of state for 14 other countries, including Canada. But with a change in the monarch, is it time for Canada to become a republic?
Today, in The Conversation Canada, Philip Resnick from the University of British Columbia provides some answers to that question. Several other Commonwealth countries have cut their ties with the British crown — Barbados became the latest to do so in 2021. But changing Canada’s head of state is more easily said than done. It would involve a long constitutional process and require settling a host of legal and political questions. But there are successful examples that Canada can follow, and as Resnick writes, “where there is a will there is a way.”
