Choose your next ECR Representative - Exeter Campuses
Deadline for Voting : Thursday 11 July 2024 (12 noon)
We are in the process of recruiting a new ECR Representative for the Exeter campuses. The ECR Rep will liaise with ECRs and voice their issues at the Research and Impact Executive Committee (RIEC), a senior committee of the University’s governance structure.
There are 2 candidates standing to represent Exeter: Cédric Mesnage and Dimitar Vlaykov. All ECRs (on R only Contracts) will receive an invitation to vote for their preferred candidate. Please ensure that you vote by the deadline of Thursday 11 July 2024 (12 noon).

NB – we have already recruited two new ECR Reps for the Cornwall campuses. There was no voting process for this as only two ECRs put themselves forward for the two vacant roles.

Led by Intercultural Communications expert Emma Sweeney, this session aims to develop participants' understanding of the benefits and challenges of working in diverse teams, and considers practical ways in which we can improve our approach. There will be opportunities to reflect on past experiences as well as build a toolkit of strategies for the future.

Holocaust Memory, Rwanda, and Genocide Prevention Today
Thursday 4 July 2024 (6 pm - 7.30 pm).
Exeter Guildhall
The Societies and Cultures Institute (SCI) has partnered with the British and Irish Association for Holocaust Studies to support this public lecture by Dr James Smith (deputy chair and founder of the Aegis Trust). This talk reflects on his experiences establishing genocide museums and memorials, and turn back to his initial work pioneering British remembrance and education on the Holocaust. This event is open to all.

YES (Your Entrepreneurs Scheme) - Open for Applications!
First Call Closes on Friday 28 July 2024
YES is an innovative global competition developed to raise awareness among Master and PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, research fellows and technicians how ideas can be commercialised.
Participants, working in four or five, are given the task of developing a hypothetical business, and in the exercise, they will pitch to demonstrate that the business could be viable, investable and ultimately successful. This fictional business plan is a great way to learn about entrepreneurship without using an idea that comes out of your current research (avoiding any problems with disclosure).
There is a cost incurred for applying however there may be financial support available.

University of Exeter Research Ethics Showcase
July - September 2024
The Research Ethics Association is delighted to partner with the University of Exeter to host a fantastic event celebrating the vital contributions of staff and students in the realm of research ethics. This showcase, generously funded by the University of Exeter and Research England, aims to spotlight the innovative and informative approaches of ethics across all disciplines.
Running from July to September, this showcase aspires to showcase interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, highlighting the importance of ethical considerations in research. All University of Exeter staff and students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, including workshops, panel discussions, and partake in creating a poster gallery, all designed to facilitate knowledge sharing and inspire best practices in research ethics.

Research Students Conference (RSC): Exeter 2024
Conference Date : 20 - 23 August 2024.
Registration and abstract submissions close Saturday 20 July 2024.
RSC is a yearly Conference for ECRs working with probability and statistics that has been running since the early 1980s. As the host institution changes annually, attending this year is a once in an (academic) lifetime opportunity for Exeter PhD students & Post-Docs!
The Conference, held on 20 - 23 August, offers a relaxed environment to share your work - something beneficial for many new PhD students.
The Conference includes oral presentations, a poster session and 3 plenary speaker talks. Confirmed speakers are:

Annual Defence and Security Doctoral Symposium (DSDS24)
Wednesdsay 13 – Thursday 14 November 2024 (10 am - 4 pm).
STEAM Museum in Swindon.
Deadline for submission of abstracts - Friday 30 August 2024
This year’s event will be the tenth anniversary of DSDS. Over the past nine symposiums over 1600 delegates from more than 200 organisations have attended, including the University of Exeter.
DSDS24 is a FREE national conference that is hosted by Cranfield University and is sponsored by AWE. The aim of the event is to showcase the work of Early Career Researchers and research students in the areas of defence and security, covering the social sciences as well as the technical and scientific aspects of defence and security. A selection of outputs from previous symposiums can be viewed in the online collections.

Opportunity: Represent ECRs on the University’s Equality Groups
Have you heard of the University’s Equality Groups?
There are five groups focusing on disability, faith and worldview, gender, race, and sexual orientation.
The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team is looking for an Early Career Researcher to join each Equality Group as a representative for ECRs. Current members include academics, chaplains, professional services colleagues, and Students’ Guild and Union colleagues.
Being a representative involves attending termly meetings, working together to address issues affecting staff and students, and monitoring action plans. It’s a great opportunity to meet and collaborate with people, make a positive difference to our policies and practices, and add to your leadership skills.

FUTURES 2024-25 Researchers at Schools programme: Call for researchers working with satellite imagery / technology!
As part of the FUTURES 2024-25 Festival, the University is working with Exeter Science Centre to develop and deliver workshops in schools between July 2024 and July 2025.
We're looking for researchers who use satellite technology or satellite observations in their work - and whose work ties into global issues (for example: climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution).
Researchers can get involved through contributing to research profiles, missions for schools, resource development and in person support with school events. This event will use resources from the Our World from Space Project and Exeter Science Centre will link in each theme to the work of a UoE researcher.
This is a fantastic opportunity to have your work featured, as well as gaining valuable outreach experience with Exeter Science Centre.

All ECRs are invited to make a contribution to our Researcher Development Programme. Can you share your knowledge and expertise? This opportunity provides teaching practice, which can be vital for your own career and professional development.

Our programme is a general offering for researchers across campuses and disciplines, so your idea for delivering a session needs to have breadth.

We have dedicated sessions for ECRs, which are often open to the wider researcher community, including PGRs.

The team will guide you through the process, from skills and delivery options, through to logistics and quality assurance.

The Learning Experiences and Innovation team have endorsed this opportunity for evidence of teaching practice for ASPIRE Professional Recognition Pathway.

Call for Applications: International Symposium on Resilient Planet
Application Deadline : Sunday 4 August 2024 (12 noon BST).
The International Symposium on Resilient Planet (the Symposium) is a prominent component of the British Council’s ISPF activity ‘Research Collaboration and Mobility: Green Industrial Revolution Programme’. Spanning three days, this fully funded event offers a wide range of engaging activities. The event will take place in Beijing, China from Monday 4 November to Wednesday 6 November 2024 and is designed specifically to encourage collaboration and networking between researchers from the UK and China.

Alcohol Awareness Week (1-7 July 2024)
According to the latest NHS ‘Health Survey for England’, “21% of adults drank at increasing or higher risk of alcohol-related harm (more than 14 units per week)”. If you are experiencing challenges relating to alcohol and drugs, support can be found on the alcohol and drugs webpage.
The Occupational Health (OH) team can also signpost to support and advice. Management referrals provide advice on how managers can support colleagues, or colleagues can self-refer to discuss how they can improve their own health and wellbeing.

Colleague Mental Health Champions update
There are now 82 Colleague Mental Health Champions across the University, in all divisions and faculties, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing within our community. To find out who the Champions are in your area, do explore our webpage.
While our Champion volunteers are happy to be approached for a 1-1 conversation and to signpost relevant support options, please remember they are not trained counsellors and are not able to provide ongoing emotional support. Our EAP Spectrum Life is available to you for confidential support and advice 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
