Click here Gentle reminder: Jokowi is not a scientistIndonesia's President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has made a bold move to relax the country's COVID-19 health protocols due to what he claims as "a more controlled situation." In a two-minute streamed video released by the state palace, Jokowi allows the public to no longer wear masks in public spaces. He also adds that the government does not require travellers to take PCR and antigen tests for domestic and foreign trips. The decision has raised questions. It is not clear whether the decision is something that the government has consulted before with health experts or something that the government instinctively does to save the economy. As we are all aware, since the beginning of the pandemic, the Indonesian government seems to prioritise protecting the economy rather than saving people's lives. In the health-economy dilemma, it is evident from Indonesia's case that choosing economy does not always work. Another lesson that Indonesia should take in its COVID-19 management is listening to experts and researchers more because nothing works than research and data-based policies. We invite scholars and researchers to send their insights and analyses on COVID-19 in Indonesia to our readers. Send your pitches here.
