Update from the Dean of Rural and Remote

Welcome to the e-News. Today I am profiling the work of Rural and Remote Health (RRH) staff who demonstrate the extent of our influence, impact, and external engagement within our national footprint and beyond Australia in the international forum for promoting health and equity.

RRH staff have delivered national orations and received national medals  (Jaqui Hughes) and have featured in the national and local press for designing and delivering rural training programs (David Lam); influencing international policy on actions to reduce the widespread availability of tobacco (Marita Hefler);  the importance of General Practice as a training environment (Emma Kennedy) and the NT Regional Training Hub hosting 25 organisations, including 12 national medical specialty colleges at the NT Medical Careers Expo.

James Smith, Cameron Stokes and Bryce Brickley presented at the World Health Promotion Conference in Abu Dhabi, with James being elected to the Global Executive Board of the International Union of Health Promotion and Education. This team also travelled to Timor-Leste to participate in a Rotary Impact Seminar alongside One Percent Program staff Jahdai Vigona and Dante Rodrigues. Next week, I will be chairing an accreditation panel aimed at boosting the capability of the midwifery workforce in Vanuatu.

Thank you to all RRH staff, I have and haven’t mentioned who are all so actively engaged in activities locally, nationally and internationally.

Congratulations

 

Congratulations  Jaqui Hughes. At a gala dinner in Sydney this May, Jaqui was awarded the prestigious Arthur E Mills Medal by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. She also delivered the 2025 Oration, powerfully reflecting on evolving practices in medicine that centre cultural safety. A proud moment recognising her leadership and impact in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health advancement.

 

Out and About

NT Medical Career Expo 2025 a success. Thank you to everyone who helped make the NT Medical Career Expo 2025 a standout event. With over 100 attendees – including medical and science students, and junior doctors – and more than 25 exhibitors from across the health sector, it was a fantastic evening of connection and career exploration. Special thanks to Debby Mauger and Eliza Gill for their outstanding efforts in organising the event, and to our MCs Melba Ridd and Uncle Richie Fejo.

 

Paramedicine students put their training into action during the annual Mass Casualty Incident, held this week at the Sturt campus. The large-scale simulation featured two scenarios, set in the Paramedicine shed and labs. With support from Police and Fire services, and medical student participation to enhance interprofessional learning, the exercise allowed students to demonstrate key triage and scene management skills aligned with PARA3002 learning outcomes.

Real Talk for Flinders University: a conversational approach to support

12pm - 1:30pm, Monday 16 June, HLTH_1.09 Lecture Theatre, Health Sciences

This short, practical workshop will help you build confidence in having safe, supportive conversations with people experiencing mental health challenges at university. You’ll be introduced to the NIP it in the bud framework, learn how to recognise signs of mental distress, start meaningful conversations, and offer timely support. FHMRI Cancer Impact Seminar Series (12pm, Tuesday 17 June, Lvl 2 HMRB Seminar Space)

Applying health economic research to drive change for cost-effective cancer prevention interventions presented by Louisa Collins (Research Lead, Cancer Prevention and Survivorship, Viertel Cancer Research Centre, Cancer Council Queensland). Menopause Workshop: All Staff Welcome (10:30am, Friday 20 June)

Menopause affects us all – directly or indirectly. Join a 90-minute interactive workshop hosted by Menopause Friendly Australia to gain a better understanding of menopause and its impacts, insight into Flinders’ support for staff, and practical ways to create a supportive workplace. Are you looking to recruit honours, masters or PhD students? FHMRI’s annual Road to Research (11:30am - 1pm, Thursday 28 August) student recruitment event is an opportunity to showcase your research to potential students and capture their interest in joining your research team. Potential supervisors are invited have an interactive display or activity to demonstrate your research to a range of prospective students and spark conversations. Examples have included origami from protein folding researchers, and standard drink pouring from NCETA. Register your interest by Friday 25 July.

 

Need to know

CMPH Finance reminder:  Is your Corporate Credit Card up to date?

When you use a University Purchasing Card/Corporate Credit Card, Transactions must be reconciled (coded and approved) in FlexiPurchase within 14 days of the statement date, which is generally around the 4th or 5th of each month.

Cards may be suspended if transactions are not reconciled within 60 days. Reminders will be sent out to the cardholders by the Credit Card team, giving cardholders a chance to get their transactions up to date. Training is available in iEnrol for both Credit Card Users and Credit Card Approvers. Information is available on Corporate Credit Card. Improving Flinders Services Survey to enhance staff support (and win prizes!)

Now in its seventh year, the Improving Flinders Services Survey is your chance to provide anonymous feedback on the University services you’ve used in the past three months. New Indigenous Naming Policy
Flinders has introduced an Indigenous Naming Policy to guide the use of traditional place names or Indigenous language in naming campuses, spaces and facilities dedicated to Indigenous education, research or engagement. The policy outlines consultation requirements with the Elders Network and local Indigenous communities to ensure appropriate approvals and cultural respect.
