Message from the Chair

Dear EAS Community,

I hope you all had a safe and relaxing 4th of July weekend. As we move into the peak of summer, I want to take a moment to celebrate some remarkable achievements by our faculty.

Professor Katherine Faber has received this year's W. David Kingery Award from the American Ceramic Society. This prestigious award honors her lifetime achievements in materials science, technology, art, and the significant educational impact she has made on countless students and colleagues.

Professor Houman Owhadi has been named a 2024 Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellow. This fellowship, the DoD's flagship single-investigator award for basic research, recognizes his groundbreaking work and substantial contributions to the field of mathematics and applied science. Being selected for this fellowship places him among an elite group of distinguished scientists and engineers from universities across the U.S., highlighting the importance and potential impact of his research.

Lastly, congratulations to Professor Anima Anandkumar and Professor Steven Low for receiving 2025 IEEE Technical Field Awards. These prestigious awards celebrate their outstanding scientific contributions and their impact on technology and society. Professor Anandkumar's innovative work in artificial intelligence and machine learning and Professor Low's pioneering research in network systems have not only advanced their respective fields but have also created practical applications that benefit society at large.

Well done and congratulations again to Professors Faber, Owhadi, Anandkumar, and Low.

Surplus High-Value Equipment Wanted/Needed

Doing a summer clean out? Have perfectly working equipment that you no longer need? List it on the Division’s webpage for Surplus High-Value Equipment for your colleagues across the Institute to happily retrieve from you. To post equipment: please send a description, specs, and photo to commofc@caltech.edu. Please also include the date you will e-waste if there are no takers. It is assumed that the equipment is working and generally available at no-cost to others at the Institute, aside from transport to be mutually arranged.

Spotlight On Our People

Tia Abraham

Tia Abraham

Undergraduate Student, Computer Science

Hey Caltech community! I’m a 2nd-year undergraduate, double majoring in Computer Science and Business, Economics, and Management (BEM), with a minor in Environmental Science and Engineering. My academic interests and coursework focus on finance, data analysis, and environmental conservation/climate change. Currently, I’m involved in research with Professor Hannah Druckenmiller, contributing to a project focused on quantifying flood mitigation values using casual machine learning techniques. Specifically, I process large geospatial datasets for input into our machine learning model. This upcoming summer, I’m excited to intern at Southern California Edison, exploring the intersection of technology and environmental sustainability, which allows me to further connect with my research interests and academic pursuits. Outside of academia and work, I enjoy attending sporting events, cheering on my hometown teams, the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche, and exploring the outdoors through hiking, biking, or spending time at the beach.

Graduate Student, Electrical Engineering

I was born and raised in Qingdao, China. I’ve been at Caltech for almost three years now and am working at Caltech Optical Imaging lab under the guidance of Professor Lihong Wang. In general, my research interests lie in designing biomedical imaging systems for both research and medical purposes that are accessible, minimally invasive, and leveraging novel physics and computational technologies. Currently, my research focuses on building the first human-scale whole-body tomography system incorporating ultrasound, thermoacoustic, and photoacoustic contrasts that could potentially enable structural imaging, biopsy procedure guiding, and in vivo histology in one system. I’m also working on building a high-resolution photoacoustic tomography system for small animals. Outside of the lab, I enjoy reading novels, watching movies (Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Koreeda Hirokazu are some of my favorite directors), and going to concerts.

We'd like to feature you!
