At last, after much community outcry, the Murugappan family from Biloela is set to be released from detention. Immigration Minister Alex Hawke will today announce the conditions of the release of the Tamil asylum seekers, who have been held on Christmas Island since 2019. As Michelle Grattan writes, the government has several options, including allowing them to apply for a non-refugee visa (the parents have been denied refugee status) or
simply giving them some kind of visa straight away and allowing them to return to the Queensland town they have made their home.
Whatever the case, the government has only now been dragged to the point of apparent compassion for the family’s plight because the youngest daughter, Tharunicaa, has been in a Perth hospital recovering from a serious blood infection. After ensuing outrage about the family’s situation, spurred by photos of the distressed little girl in hospital, the government is finally set to act.

We recently heard reports of a new and dangerous 'hybrid' variant circulating in Vietnam. There is such as a thing as a hybrid viral variant — but this doesn't appear to be it.

For phascogales, tree hollows are getting harder to find. I venture into forests and study how well artificial hollows made with chainsaws can replace them.
