The semi-final was a fantastic demonstration of the amazing and diverse research being undertaken by Flinders PhD researchers. Congratulations to Cassandra Haines (Semi Final Winner, NHS), Iriana Freitas De Jesus Ximenes (Semi-Final Runner up, HASS), Maddison Dix (MPH), Priyadharshany Sandana Pitchai (EPSW), Vinícius Guedes Gonçalves de Oliveira (BGL) and Ying Yu (NHS) who will be competing in the final on Friday 8 September. Congratulations to PhD student AHM Mohsinul Reza, from the College of Science and Engineering, for being awarded a State Government Circular Economy Student Award. Supervised by Professors Jian Qin and Youhong Tang, Dr Reza’s Flinders project focuses on developing a novel method for quick identification and optimisation of the lipid production conditions in microalgae. Congratulations to Lisia Barros Ferreira (MPH) on receiving outstanding results from examiners on her thesis titled "Effects of Inflammatory Cytokines on Human Retinal Endothelial Cells". Sharing your research impact with a wider audience can make you stand out and showcase your contribution to your particular field of interest. This guide will ensure you're able to make the most of your contribution to Flinders research and set yourself up for future collaborations and opportunities. Update your USIFrom 1 January 2023 all higher education students (including those who commenced prior to 2021) must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to graduate and receive their testamur. You can apply for one here or if you have studied a VET course in the last five years, including while at secondary school, you may already have a USI. If you think you may have one but aren’t sure, you can check by visiting Find your USI. If you are attending an upcoming graduation ceremony please ensure you have entered your USI in the Student System. U P C O M I N G D E V E L O P M E N T W O R K S H O P SEthics Application Hands-on WorkshopThis session on Thursday 21 September is for researchers and students who require support with their Ethics application. The expectation is that you have already finalised the methodology of your project but require assistance with the ethical aspects of it. For human research ethics this will include informed consent, withdrawal rights, justification, and vulnerable participant groups. For animal ethics this will include pain and distress, animal welfare issues and the 3Rs. Thesis Formatting & Long Documents WorkshopDo you have a messy word document and don't know how to fix it? This course will teach you how to set yourself up with a well-organised file. You will learn how to identify potential problem areas, how to lay out, using styles, importance of referencing correctly and preparing your thesis as a professional document for examination. The next course is held on Friday 22 September, 9.30am-12.30pm, online.
