What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - August

Waiata Theatre Productions Auditions. Waiata Theatre Productions is proud to announce that their 2025 production is… The Hunchback of Notre Dame Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s gothic novel. The musical begins as the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be 'Out There,' observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the Roma – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. A sweeping score and powerful story make The Hunchback of Notre Dame an instant classic. Audiences will be swept away by the magic of this
truly unforgettable musical. Auditions will take place on the 18th and 19th of August 2024 at Earnscleugh Hall, Alexandra, with the season running from the 25th of April to the 18th of May 2025. Those eager to audition can book Here The Central Otago Arts Trail. Over time, Central Otago Arts has developed the Central Otago Arts Trail - a guide featuring artists, galleries, and studios in the area open to visitors. The project aims to promote artists and the arts, encourage community engagement in the arts, and boost art tourism in the region. Previously, the arts trail was accessible through a booklet distributed to public venues, but it has become outdated with artists moving and new ones joining. To enhance long-term project management, we are introducing an arts trail rack card to direct people to the Central Otago Arts Trail online, which will be easier to update. In addition, we plan to highlight public artworks of interest across our region. If you are part of the creative industry in Central Otago and have a studio, workshop, gallery, or shop open to the public, please get in touch! We would be thrilled to include you on our Central Otago Arts Trail. Email: [email protected] or phone 022 017 0478. The Central Otago District Arts Trust AGM.
