Chapman Radio is rebuilding and re-branding to create a radio station fit for the new decade and they are looking for alumni to get involved. Any former Chapman Radio DJs interested in being part of the rebuild or helping develop an Alumni Hall-of-Fame show series can reach out to the faculty advisor, Travis Bartosh. Read more about the rebuild in this recent blog and check out the Chapman Radio Instagram to see what’s next.
For School of Communication students, Peace Communication offers an opportunity to see how their major comes to life in an interdisciplinary and international context. In a partnership with the United Nations-mandated University for Peace, students visit and learn from various non-profit, profit, and government organizations working toward social justice, sustainability, and peace in Costa Rica. This short
travel course is an opportunity to see their course work applied to the real world, but for many it is a life-changing experience. Senior communication studies major, Colleen Penaluna, is one such student. Read more about Colleen’s experience.
Communication Theory Applied to Documentary StorytellingWhen you hear about a travel course to the Philippines you imagine a week spent exploring crystal clear, blue waters and enjoying the tropical weather. What students in the School of Communication actually got was a paradise covered in the ash of an erupting volcano. Though, they didn’t let that stop them from learning about Filipino culture and the process of making a documentary. On this travel course, communication students worked with Dodge film students to write, produce, direct, and film documentaries about different topics surrounding life in the
Philippines. The course, Social Nonfiction Methodologies, teaches students to apply communication theory to their documentary storytelling.

“I decided to pursue my graduate degrees in communication because I want to learn about how we can improve people’s lives through communication, particularly those with marginalized identities. We have the opportunity to better someone’s life each time we communicate, and that’s not something to take for granted.” Shana graduated in 2006 with her B.A. in Communication Studies and a minor in Public Relations. In this alumni spotlight, she talks to us about what she’s been up to since graduating from Chapman and why she decided to pursue her graduate degrees.
