We all miss you so much and are glad that the technologies Chapman has made available to us are keeping us connected and helping you make the most out of this challenging experience. I met with my COM 672 (graduate class in organizational communication) students on Monday afternoon via Zoom. I loved seeing their dogs and their smiling faces as we had a fantastic conversation about a most timely topic: Individual and organizational resilience. After class, one research team informed me that they were modifying their semester project to study resilience responses to COVID-19 relating to work and career development. This is just one example of how you, our amazing School of Communication family, are facing adversity with a curious, forward-thinking, and solution-oriented attitude. As communication researchers, we may not be developing treatments and vaccines, but our interest in how interaction impacts the human condition will be extremely valuable in the long recovery from this experience. Looking ahead, Summer and Fall 2020 registration is here! Isn’t it wonderful to be planning your return to campus? Please familiarize yourself with the registration timeline I want to remind you that your advisors (Travis Bartosh, Arleen Bejerano, and Andrea Weber) remain available to you as ever through Teams. Please click here to view advising hours and book your appointment to talk about your fall schedule. Similarly, our career advisor, Nance Rosen, is available for appointments on Handshake. I am confident you will find Nance’s positive approach to job searching during these difficult times helpful and reassuring. Ms. Rosen is making direct contact with our graduating seniors to offer an added level of support. I encourage you to avail yourself of her services. I believe that people who remain positive, stay active in the short term, and continue planning for the long term will be the ones who emerge from this period most successfully. Finally, I am heartened to learn this week that some of Chapman University’s generous supporters continue to find ways to support you, the heart of our mission, during this time. Some families, in a position to do so, have declined the student housing refund so that Chapman could use the money to help a student who needs it. Other community members have pledged their stimulus checks from the federal government to the Chapman Fund to support students in need. Members of our Town & Gown organization returned thousands of dollars in event refunds to fund scholarships. And on and on. Stories like these should inspire us all to focus on what we can be grateful for and consider ways to help others. There are no small acts of helpfulness or generosity at a time like this. As I close, I remind you that we are one day closer to this all being behind us. As I close, I remind you that we are one day closer to this all being behind us. Reach for the positive and keep going. We will get there together. Jennifer Jennifer H.
