Around 200 million people use cannabis recreationally and it is being legalised in more and more countries. But while many users welcome the exhilaration, reflection and relaxation it can temporarily bring, research suggests prolonged use may negatively alter how we think and feel – even when we’re not taking it.
Even mild cannabis use can harm our ability to focus and plan, while heavy use and addiction is linked to problems with memory and executive functions such as flexible thinking. In some people, it can also lead to problems with motivation, while for others it is a risk factor for developing psychotic experiences.
Meanwhile, the Apple TV+ show Severance imagines what would happen to our sense of self if we could completely separate our work and home lives. Philosophy suggests it’s a bad idea even trying. And in Russia, many people are longing for the days of the USSR. Here’s why.
