Some Indonesians - especially Javanese and Chinese descents - still go with one name. However, beginning in May 2022, it would be illegal for one-word names like Soeharto and Sukarno, both names of the country's former presidents, to appear in civic documents. The reason behind the new regulation is still unclear, with some citing administrative concerns as many documents require people to list their first and last names. But would the administrative reasons be enough to justify a regulation that will obliterate a century-old culture?
