News from the College of Business, Government & Law
We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.
Welcome to the August edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter. Our lead story this month is the launch of a major piece of research by the Centre for Social Impact – Flinders in collaboration with the Centre for Social Impact – UWA and multiple government and private partners regarding Australia first social impact bond targeting homelessness. It is an inspiring piece of work
which exemplifies the College mission and its aim to concentrate and scale our research effort.
It is great to see so many areas of renewal and innovation in the College at the moment, across our entire education and research portfolios. Other stories include Michelle Yeong’s Fearless Conversations contribution on financial education, Luis da Vinha’s presentation on hyper videos for student engagement, Anthony Langlois’ new book on sexuality and gender diversity rights in SE Asia, 8 new A/A* journal articles, and $4.6M in new contracted research income.
Kind regards,
Michael Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

CSI supports 575 people in SA with chronic homelessness
New research breaks homelessness cycle
The Centre for Social Impact research, launched yesterday by the Hon Nat Cook MP, Minister for Human Services (pictured above) found that the majority of the 575 people in South Australia with a history of chronic homelessness have found stable housing and are well on the way to a better life after three years of intensive support under the 'Aspire' program - Australia's first social impact bond targeting homelessness. This project was a fantastic collaboration with the Centre for Social Impact at Flinders University and the Centre for Social Impact at the University of Western Australia, in partnership with multiple SA Government Agencies, the Hutt Street Centre and housing providers, Social Ventures Australia and private investors. Congratulations to the Centre for Social Impact team (note see the opening image of our newsletter featuring from left: Dr Veronica Coram, Flinders University Centre for Social Impact Researcher, Elyse Sainty, Director, Social Ventures Australia and Professor Ian Goodwin-Smith, Flinders University Centre for Social Impact
Director).

Dr Michelle Yeong's formula for success Resilience and understanding are the fundamentals of accounting, says experienced finance professional Dr Michelle Yeong.
“I think one should perhaps learn to understand the fundamentals of accounting first,” she says. “Then it is a combination of depth in terms of technical skills, such as audit and tax, and a breadth of professional and IT skills, which includes knowledge in financial technology... You might want to have that bracket of skills to be successful in finance but staying resilient in the face of constant change is also key.”
Since the last edition of the newsletter until 13 July, BGL researchers had eight articles included in top 10% / A* / A / Q1 ranked journals.

New FLO site for support with Systematic Searching The Library has launched a new Systematic Literature Searching topic in FLO. Ideal for any
students (honours, masters, PhD) and researchers planning to undertake comprehensive, systematic searches, this resource:
• Introduces students to engaging with literature at an advanced level
• Provides an overview of several types of reviews, including scoping, narrative, and systematic reviews
• Steps through the process of searching systematically for literature: from designing a project and comprehensive searches; to collecting and managing resources; to reporting the search methodology.
• The topic’s modular design can be embedded as a whole or scaffolded throughout a semester. Supporting a flipped classroom approach, students can work through the modules at their own pace and can revisit them as many times as they need. Topic Coordinators can contact the Library via the ‘Embedding library skills in my topic’ form on Service One to submit a request or to arrange a meeting to discuss how they can best support your students.
Using Hyper-Videos to Foster Greater Student Engagement Luis da Vinha presented a paper titled “Using Hyper-Videos to Foster Greater Student Engagement” at the 2002 Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) Annual Conference.
The presentation detailed and discussed the development and implementation of hyper-videos and how they can be used to address the institutional and educational challenges posed by the greater use of hybrid and blended strategies and increase the level of student engagement with the online video content.

Flinders Print Did you know? • The new printers have been fully installed across CBGL!
• You might have worked out that they can all staple, but did you know they can also hole punch? (select printer properties/finishing tab).
• When you swipe in you can release all print jobs at once – you don’t need to select ‘print release’ and each individual job first. Look for the ‘Print All’ button.
• If you forget your swipe card you can log in/print release with FAN/password.
• It’s good to swipe-out to log out, as well as swiping-in. If you don’t the printer will log you out automatically after a while, but it’s good practice for security and also helps the next user if they arrive before the automatic logout occurs.
Help guides are available here. Thank you for adjusting to the new process to enable our greener future.
