Hello |

What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - June.

Photographic work by Simon Williams from authenticas.org. World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year and is the United Nation's vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. The global theme for 2019 is Air Pollution. This year MAD4CO, Central Stories and CODAT have joined forces to mark World Environment Day by coordinating an exhibition of photographic works of the night skies in central South Island. New Zealand is
renowned for some of the clearest night skies in the world, however this reputation is being challenged by increasing air pollution, particularly in the winter months. The Nightscapes Photographic Exhibition is an opportunity for artists and viewers to explore and discuss the World Environment Day theme. The exhibition opened on the 2nd of June and a floor talk is planned on the 4th of June, 5pm at Central Stories. Greg Bodeker from Bodeker Scientific will speak on the particulate matter emissions maps project his team are undertaking and local photographers will share technical details on their works. Entry is free and everyone is warmly invited to attend. In conjunction with World Environment Day and the Nightscape Exhibition Central Otago Reap is offering an Astrophotography Workshop. This will be facilitated by Simon Williams who runs a photography and tour business with his partner Emma in Queenstown. Simon’s BSc (hons) is in Physics with Astrophysics and he has followed a career path based around digital design, photography, facilitation and education within corporate and community spaces during the last 20 years. Last month Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery, in association with Milford Galleries, hosted the opening of 'Bark', an exhibition of works by Dick Frizzell. 'Bark' is a series of works that explore the visual aspects of the written word and operate as a commentary on New Zealand’s social fabric. The
opening was also was a final farewell to Dick and his wife Jude who have been the latest residents of Henderson House. Dick and Jude have developed strong relationships within the community and attendance at the opening was testament to the value of having visiting artists to the region. 'Bark' is on show until the 19th July. As we sadly farewell Dick Frizzell we look forward to welcoming the next Henderson House residents, Kate de Goldi and her husband Bruce Foster. A new art group has been formed in Central Otago. 'Indigo', an informal and fluid collaboration of artists have adopted a different approach to presenting their art
with plans to curate and show their work in a variety of spaces in the region and further afield. While there is a core group of people involved, Indigo are looking at the possibility of inviting additional artists to participate in selected exhibitions. Currently shows are planned for the next two years throughout the South Island. Look out for upcoming exhibitions in winter at Wanaka, spring in Cromwell as well as the 'Gallery on Blueskin' and over the summer at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. If you are planning a winter break this year keep an eye out for Cromwell artist Rachel Hirabayashi’s paintings on airport
arrival and departures boards and a short film currently showing on the Qantas inflight service. The latest campaign of rental car company Avis involves filming artists from New Zealand and Australia as they travel to and get inspired by their favourite scenic destinations. Sydney based art director Jonathan May and a team of other people followed Rachel as she travelled south. You can see this and details of further artists involved in the campaign, by following this link https://www.avis.co.nz/en/discover-nz/art-of-discovery. Finally, a gentle reminder to all the artists who plan to enter this year’s Arts Gold Awards 2019 to get creating as entries close on the 1st August. This year’s awards will be judged by renowned New Zealand contemporary artist, Dick Frizzell and celebrated director of the Eastern Southland Gallery, Jim Geddes. We hope you have a lovely June.
