Childhood Experiences & Heart HealthThroughout adulthood, adverse family experiences in childhood may increase the odds of poor cardiovascular health, while stable, nurturing caregiver relationships during childhood may increase the chances of optimal heart health throughout adulthood, according to new research published early this year in "Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes," a peer-reviewed American Heart Association journal. According to the researchers, this study is the first to identify a link between childhood family environment and cardiovascular health at different times throughout the course of adult life, which was a 20-year follow-up period. “While it is known that early childhood health lays the foundation for health later in life, we found how children interact with adults in their lives may also be impactful,” said lead study author Robin Ortiz, M.D., M.S. |
Let's Talk LeadershipWhat makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests it's someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. "Leadership is a choice. It is not a rank. I know many people at the senior-most levels of organizations who are absolutely not leaders. They are authorities, and we do what they say because they have authority over us, but we would not follow them. And I know many people who are at the bottoms of organizations who have no authority and they are absolutely leaders, and this is because they have chosen to look after the person to the left of them, and they have chosen to look after the person to the right of them. This is what a leader is." |
The theme of the April 2024 Child Abuse Prevention Month is Building a Hopeful Future, Together. Throughout the month, Prevent Child Abuse Wyoming, affiliates, and stakeholders are using a community building metaphor to reinforce the message that "each day is an opportunity to build the foundation for our future."
Children and families are the building blocks of our society. We all have a stake in preparing children to grow up to be healthy and thriving members of our community, and each day is an opportunity to establish a firm foundation.
We hope you join us throughout the month of April to spread awareness of the importance of child abuse prevention in Wyoming!

The Pivotal Role of FRCs in Promoting Family & Child Well-Being
The report, "Meeting Family Needs: A Multi-System Framework for Child and Family Well-Being," from Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, addresses the critical need for a family and child well-being system that can proactively support families facing adversity. One key aspect of this proposed system is the implementation of Family Resource Centers (FRCs) as part of the strategic service expansion. The report suggests that FRCs can play a pivotal role in reducing child abuse and neglect cases and improving family self-sufficiency. This innovative approach aligns with the broader vision of the report to transform the child welfare system into one that proactively meets family needs.
