It’s not always easy to grasp the impact that events like the war in the Ukraine are having on the continent. But it’s important to do so because seismic shifts are taking place, affecting every aspect of life in African countries. Take trade. The European Union and the US have embarked on a journey to reduce their dependency on buying things from countries like Russia because of its military offensive against Ukraine. The idea, as spelt out by leading figures, is to pursue deeper partnerships with countries they trust. The term being used is ‘friend-shoring’. Jonathan Munemo explains why this is bad news for Africa and what countries on the continent can do to counter the trend.
Uganda’s Ebola outbreak is getting worse. Within two weeks, several dozen people are believed to have contracted the deadly virus and 23 have died. The ability of Ebola to spread must not be underestimated. The first identified case was found in a district along a major highway to the capital city, Kampala, and neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. Ebola detection expert Mosoka Fallah presents five steps that countries in East Africa must take to protect
themselves and contain the outbreak.
