News from the College of Business, Government and Law

We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.

Welcome to the June edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter.

Our lead photo in the June newsletter shows the team that represented the College at our new-look awards night recently, where Tania Leiman did a mighty job in orchestrating conversations between our top students and industry benefactors, with the support of academic staff. Unfortunately, the photo does not include many of our professional staff who also made the evening a night to remember. In particular, Maria Romeo identified the need for a new approach to our awards night, proposed the framework for its operationalisation, and then promoted the evening so effectively that every student and industry sponsor who accepted an invitation turned up on the night. Congratulations Maria, Tania, and the entire team for an extraordinarily successful awards night.

Our lead stories in this newsletter are about our outreach through social media, school visits and community events for our courses in business, government, law, and criminology. A big thank you to everyone who turns up and makes these activities work. It is a critical contribution to our pending move to the City and Festival Plaza.

Finally, do not overlook our new research funding awards for this month. No, you are not seeing things. A single grant for the Australian Industrial Transformation Institute has eclipsed our total income for 2022, which in turn was roughly three times our total income for 2021. The tide of research scale and concentration is well and truly coming in!

Kind regards,
Michael

Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

Have you seen BGL content on Flinders' social media?

The best-performing social media posts for BGL in May were about our prizes and industry networking night; students who made the final of a National Business Simulation Competition; and reflections from a Law student who recently returned from a study trip to the UK. View the posts: 1, 2, 3.

Flinders University's organic social media presence - comprising profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter - is followed by more than 250,000 users combined with the opportunity for thousands more to engage with high-performing content.

Why make time for social media?

Social media content can help with student recruitment, personal branding, attraction and retention of team members, and for research funding opportunities. Content such as this also addresses what future students want. Flinders University market research from 2022 tells us that the top desired features from universities are: that students are well supported in their studies, that the university has an excellent academic reputation, that lecturers and teachers are experts in their fields, that the university prepares students for the future, and that students have high employment opportunities.

What is organic social media?

Organic social media is all of the free content - photos, videos, blog articles, and other posts - that we share with social media users on our feeds. It's the foundation of a successful digital marketing strategy, and a powerful way to establish our personality and voice, and build relationships with prospective students at scale.

But content needs to be engaging to perform well, and deliver value. If you're reading this, you may be aware of content that would great for Flinders' social media - and if so, we'd love to hear from you. Visit the link below to find out how you can help us make an impact on social media, and why doing so has the power to uplift all of our work.

Santos Power Cup Leadership Day

Criminology team Dr Andrew Groves, Associate Professor Marinella Marmo, and Dr Jeremy Ryder at the Santos Power Cup Leadership Day.

For two years now, Flinders University has been a proud supporter of Port Adelaide Football Club’s industry-leading Santos Aboriginal Power Cup program. As a result, over 500 Indigenous Year 10 – 12 students from across metro and regional South Australia were recently on our Bedford Park campus for a Leadership Day, including presentations from industry partners, a health and wellbeing workshop, and cultural activities.

The Criminology team has made incredible efforts in the outreach space, as we reported on last month in this piece on
Criminology and Law outreach to schools.

Speaking of Law, the team is continuing their outreach activities with recent visits including talks from Professor Tania Leiman at Pembroke and Loreto. The Business team is busy, too, with a number of planned outreach activities on the horizon.

Disrupting cycles of homelessness and recidivism for people with complex needs

The Centre for Social Impact and Flinders Criminology researchers – Professor Ian Goodwin-Smith, Associate Professor Selina Tually, Professor Svetlana Bogomolova, Professor Mark Halsey, Associate Professor Caitlin Hughes and Dr Simone Deegan – have joined forces to explicate avenues to disrupt and break cycles of homelessness and recidivism for people with complex needs.

Cognisant that traditional services responses are often punitive or siloed and ultimately ineffective, their first project is analyzing the potential benefits of employing “hubs” or “one stop shops” that integrate multiple services (eg housing, employment, addiction, legal services and the like) in a single location.

Site visits across Sydney, Darwin, Melbourne have been completed, alongside visits to relevant government agencies, including Corrections and Housing.

Visiting academic and industry leader

Dr. Louise Schaper, an internationally respected digital health academic and industry leader, kindly visited the College of Business, Government and Law (CBGL) on the 15th and 16th of May 2023. As the CEO of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health, Dr. Schaper is recognised as a transformational leader, impassioned by catalysing change and achieving tangible outcomes in the health sector.

During her visit, Dr. Schaper delivered a visionary guest lecture entitled "Nexus between health, data, and technology: the new normal in a digital world", and she actively participated in a VIP Panel Event on Opportunities and Future Directions for Digital Health Research in South Australia, with digital health research luminaries and industry leaders. Continuing her engagement, Dr. Schaper contributed to a highly enriching Master Class session on digital health the following day.

Dr. Schaper's visit to CBGL was made possible through the facilitation of Mr. Mark Brommeyer, Senior Lecturer in Health Care Management, in concert with the recently launched Graduate Certificate in Digital Health Management.

Researcher Spotlight: Dr Andreas Cebulla

"The future of work presents challenges that individuals, organizations, and society as a whole need to address. They range from automation and technological disruption, the rise of the gig economy and the proliferation of precarious work, new job polarisation risks and inequalities, and shifts in work-life balance and well-being, to technological advances that reshape job-task profiles at a time when workforce demographics are changing."

Inviting vista or hostile landscape? The gig economy through the eyes of young Australians

The Australian Industrial Transformation Institute is pleased to host Dr Josh Healy (Newcastle) and Dr Andi Pekarek (Melbourne).

Young people are avid participants in the gig economy, as users and as workers. This dual involvement means that platform companies play a significant role in many young people’s lives, both in enabling their consumption and providing new opportunities for work.

In this paper, Dr Josh Healy and Dr Andi Pekarek present contemporary evidence of how young Australians engage with platforms and their views about gig work. They find that while young people have taken enthusiastically to platforms as users, they are pessimistic about important aspects of gig work. And discuss what this combination of support and suspicion portends for young people’s awareness and acceptance of platforms’ labour practices, which are central to the future of work.

The talk will be followed by a discussion with Prof. John Spoehr, Director of the Australian Industrial Transformation Institute (AITI). It is suitable for anyone interested in the gig economy and the future of work.
