Youth Arts Central Otago What's On – Dec 25 & Jan 26

Happy December! It's almost time to bring on the holiday
cheer. It's a reasonably quiet time in the youth arts space over the holidays after a busy year of amazing events. I hope you enjoy the ones featured in our youth arts calendar and the competitions and links included below. CREATE: Get crafty T’is the season for Christmas crafts, so here’s a few ideas: ENTER: Summer fun The annual Naseby Photo Competition encourages you to share your creativity and unique experiences of summer in Naseby, and there's some great prizes to be won. The activity is a
fun creative challenge if you're heading that way over December or January. WATCH & LISTEN: Festive stories The
little ones might enjoy the magical stories ‘Memoirs of an Elf’ read by Sutton Foster and ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker’ read by Chrissy Metz. Storyline Online, the organisation who create these videos, produces many more stories that young ones might enjoy over the holidays. READ: Writing from young poets The phrase "poetry arrived in search of me" is a famous line from "Poetry" by Chilean writer Pablo Neruda. In
it, he describes poetry as a force that came to him from an unknown origin, at a young age, without specific words or voices, and that it "touched him" and inspired him to begin writing. The line personifies poetry as an active entity that seeks out the poet. The School for Young Writers have selected fifteen poems by young people for you to enjoy. In this collection, the poets help us see with new eyes. LISTEN: A different type of Christmas Lake Hāwea musician Anna van Riel’s song 'Christmas in New Zealand' communicates the best bits about our festive season. SEE: Experience the world's most iconic street art this summer in Christchurch! Visiting the South Island for the first
time, Te Pae Christchurch is host to The Art of Banksy, the world's largest exhibition of Banksy art that has brought Banksy’s works to over 1.5 million visitors in 19 cities across the globe. More than 150 authenticated Banksy pieces will be on display, including prints, canvases and other unique works. This is your last chance to see these pieces in New Zealand. The exhibition will run from 17 December – 27 January 2026. Click here for details. SHARE: Tell your story If you love storytelling using a camera, be sure to enter the Stills Photography Competition. It’s free to enter and is open to all school students that were enrolled nationwide in 2025. View the exceptional work of past winners in the online Stills 2025 Look Book here. Many thanks for your support this year. I hope your holidays are filled with a crazy amount of fun, warmth and creativity. Ngā mihi,
Isabel (Central Otago Arts)
