Research News Roundup - January 2024 2023

Highlights of this month’s newsletter includes  brief bios of OOR & GE's newest members, announcements, events, and news from Leatherby Libraries. Be sure to read the entire newsletter to be entered into our January raffle!

 

Riley Day, Graduate Education Administrative Coordinator, recently graduated from Chapman this December with a B.S. in Business Administration. She has been working at Chapman in the Human Resources department since she was a sophomore, onboarding all student employees and promoting student job fairs. Riley's favorite things to do are being with friends, reading, and listening to music. She is also a big foodie and loves Thai and Italian cuisines and chocolate!

 

Giovanni (Gio) Bravo Juarez, was born in Michoacán Mexico and raised in Los Angeles. Gio started his work journey as a construction worker but found opportunity in the research field at the University of California, Irvine. Although Gio appreciated his journey at UCI, he wanted to expand his horizons. His hard work and dedication brought him to our team at Chapman University. Gio is excited and ready for this next chapter in his life and we are very excited for him to join our team as a Senior Technician in the Office of Research and Graduate Education.

 

Andrew Lee, Technician, is a recent UC Berkeley graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Environmental Biology. He has experience working as a Technician Assistant at the VCA Broadway Pet and working with Professor Jim McGuire at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology in Berkeley taking morphometric data of preserved specimens. He plans to apply to vet school within the next few years. Andrew has a passion for working with animals and field research which he hopes to share with those around him.

 

NSF Issues Notice on Generative AI Usage in Proposals

NSF has released its policy on generative AI usage in proposal preparation and peer review processes. Proposers are encouraged to indicate in the project description the extent to which, if any, generative AI technology was used and how it was used to develop their proposal. NSF reviewers are prohibited from uploading any content from proposals, review information and related records to non-approved generative AI tools.

NSF is especially seeking post-award research administration experts, contract and grant accounting professionals and leaders from the higher education research financial sector.

 

IRB Training

Thank you to everyone who completed the IRB’s 5-minute Qualtrics survey last month which sought ideas on training needs of human subject researchers. Please stay tuned to further news on upcoming training opportunities for 2024!

 

Multi-Site Studies

Chapman University is now a participating institution in SMART IRB. SMART IRB is a platform that facilitates the establishment of reliance agreements (for multi-institution research) through use of a common set of standard operating procedures and a reliance agreement template. The platform enables implementation NIH’s Policy on the Use of a Single Institutional Review Board for Multisite Research and the Revised Common Rule Cooperative Research Provision. NIH Early Stage Investigator R01 Opportunities 

NIH recently released the new information for the Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grants (R01 awards). These are great opportunities for early stage investigators who want to propose a new research direction for which they don’t yet have preliminary data.

Industry Alliances & Commercialization Inventions Workshop

Come join the Industry Alliances & Commercialization office on Wednesday February 7th 12pm-1pm for a workshop about inventions. Learn more about what exactly is an invention and how to tell when you have one. What to do when you have an invention (e.g. when are the best times to report your inventions?) and what is the university’s process in managing your invention? The workshop will be approximately 1-hour long and will be delivered via Zoom.

Introducing the inaugural Eric M. Scandrett Graduate Research Prize, a new research award recognizing excellent research and effective use of library resources by Chapman University graduate students. Applications are due Sunday, April 21st, 2024.

Applications for the 16th Annual Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize are now open! Undergraduate students who used library resources for research projects and papers in the past year are encouraged to apply. Submissions for this award are due Sunday, April 21st, 2024.
