Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant update

Thursday 11 September

Activated sludge reactor design finalised for tender

The initial design (shown below) for Christchurch’s new Activated Sludge Reactor at the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant is now complete and has been issued to contractors as part of the tender process. The project team provided an update to Council last week – watch it here.

Contracts for construction monitoring (CA) and construction administration (CA) have also been awarded, ensuring independent oversight throughout the build. Tendering for the main construction contract is underway, with work expected to begin once a contractor is confirmed. Site establishment and construction are expected to start by the end of this year or early in the new year.

To keep neighbours and residents informed, we’ll be holding a community meeting once the contractor is confirmed. This will be an opportunity to meet the project team, ask questions, and hear more about the next stage of works. Details will be shared via this newsletter and our website.

The new reactor will be a substantial structure (67m x 67m and 7m high), housing a blower room to mix air with incoming wastewater. The design process has been accelerated by working closely with contractors and making use of 3D design technology. Once construction begins, our goal is to move quickly, with commissioning of the plant currently targeted for 2028.

This project is a critical step in reducing odour, restoring full treatment capacity, and improving the resilience of Christchurch’s wastewater system. We appreciate the community’s continued patience and support as we move forward.

Annual biosolid dryer maintenance starting soon

Annual maintenance on the biosolids dryers will start on Wednesday 24 September, with work expected to take around three weeks.

During this period, wet biosolids will be temporarily stockpiled onsite, as we will not be able to dry them. Waste management will collect the wet biosolids on weekdays and transport them to the Kate Valley landfill for disposal.

No odour expected

Based on previous experience, no odour issues are expected from the stored material, but the site will be closely monitored during this time and any concerns will be addressed promptly.

What are biosolids?

Biosolids are treated organic solids from wastewater, processed to a standard suitable for reuse. Our treatment plant produces around 3500 dry tonnes annually, which are normally dried into a pathogen-free, odourless granule used to improve soil health.

Hydrogen sulphide monitors back in action

All odour monitors have now been recalibrated and reinstalled. This routine work was timed for winter, when the ponds are stable and odour levels are typically at their lowest.

Hydrogen sulphide data collection has now resumed and will continue to provide important information about odour levels around the plant.
